Sexual Abuse Therapists in Coquitlam, BC
You may have grown up feeling unsafe, unseen, or responsible for other people’s emotions. As an adult, this can show up as a harsh inner voice, chronic anxiety, emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing, or feeling disconnected from yourself and others. You might feel exhausted from holding it together and wonder why things that seem easy for others feel so hard for you. These are common responses to trauma and abuse, not personal failures. Therapy can help reduce shame, increase emotional regulation, and support you in feeling more grounded, present, and connected.

Many come to me feeling stuck, disconnected, and weighed down by their past, longing for a space where they are truly seen and heard. They are looking for more than just symptom relief; they want to heal deep wounds, rebuild their self-worth, find practical tools to feel empowered in their own lives.
My role is to walk beside them with warmth and expertise, providing that safe, non-judgmental space to process pain, cultivate resilience, and rediscover their strength.

Most of us are yearning for more out of life and our relationships. We yearn for more freedom, more choice, more love, more adventure, more willingness to risk, more contribution, more peace, more belonging. Clients say that as a result of seeing me for therapy, they experience themselves as having a renewed sense of purpose, direction, more freedom, peace, energy, vitality and a stronger connection to their own life force. I am unique from others in my field because I have devoted my life to learning how to help my clients actually transform what is holding them back rather than just talking about it.

Believing that we, as humans, are shaped by our lived experiences, I developed a deep passion for attachment work. I specialize in attachment-focused EMDR therapy, informed by Parts Work and existential therapy.
I have worked in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and within LGBTQ2S communities, where I developed a profound appreciation for the many diverse paths to healing.
My journey began with a focus on substance use, and over time, that path led me toward specializing in trauma. Today, I support a wide range of individuals in reconnecting with their calm, curious, connected, compassionate, clear, courageous, confident, and creative.

When we experience traumas or life stressors it can be not only overwhelming but also very isolating as it often feels like no one can understand what you are going through. Without having a space to explore and unpack these stressors in a meaningful way, we often turn those thoughts and feelings inwards, internalize our issues, and experience guilt and shame. This can also lead to negative interactions with our loved ones and can adversely impact our relationship with them. My focus is to help individuals grow from their struggles, heal from their pain and move forward to where they want to be in life so that they can thrive.

I completely understand that the thought of going to a counsellor can be intimidating. Each individual I meet have a unique history and cultural backgrounds that shape their life experiences. I work with my clients to explore what’s on their mind I aim to provide a safe space, non-judgmental, and trusting environment so that through self-understanding my clients are able to discover effective ways of supporting themselves.

For over 30 years, I’ve worked alongside people trying to make sense of what’s happening in their lives, Never more so than when things feel confusing, overwhelming, or just not quite right.
I often meet people at points where something has shifted, be that in relationships, in work, or in how they feel within themselves. Together, we slow things down, make sense of what’s happening, and find a way forward that feels right for you.
It’s not rigid or scripted. Some sessions are thoughtful and reflective, others a bit more conversational and there’s usually room for humour, because that’s part of being human too.

You might look like you’re holding it together on the outside, but inside feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or exhausted. Maybe you’ve been through experiences that still live in your body (tightness, anxiety, numbness) even after years of trying to “talk it through.”
You may be navigating trauma, chronic stress, migration, illness, or systems that were never built with you in mind. You want more than coping strategies and you want to feel safer in your body, more present in your relationships, and less controlled by the past. I work especially well with adults who haven’t found relief in traditional talk therapy.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
