“Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart” writes Fyodor Dostoyevsky. This quote, though inspiring, leaves much unexplained. How do we transform our experiences of pain and suffering (i.e. anxiety,
grief
, depression, relationship discord) into the beauty of a deeper heart? Marcel Proust provides a clue, “We are healed of a suffering only by experiencing it to the full”. Thus, the transformation of suffering comes through full experience. In a society that tends to bury suffering, a guide specializing in unearthing its hidden potential is key.

Accepting new clients! This is definitely not what you expected. You may have thought that everything would fall perfectly into place, that becoming or being a parent would be the most natural thing in the world. Now, you’re finding that the fears, the anxiety, the self-doubt, the
grief
over your old life, or the disconnection from your partner are ruling your mind. You might be having a tough time sleeping, noticing some scary thoughts popping up, and just getting through each day is a trial. You wonder if you’re really connecting with your partner or your child(ren). You might be wondering who you even are these days.

I love being a therapist. I also love home organization. My two loves have resulted in two parts to my practice: both traditional therapy, and my own "Space of Mind" process that marries psychotherapy and decluttering. Looking to traditional therapy, I am passionate about working with both individuals and couples as they navigate life's transitions and feelings of stuckness. Anxiety, depression, communication and conflict struggles, self-esteem,
grief
and
loss
, parenting and self-care are among many of the topics given space in my therapy room.

Amanda Montroy
Counsellor, RTC

Having worked in the Health Care field for over 17 years, I have gained a wide range of knowledge about helping individuals and families who are suffering from an illness, anxiety, PTSD or struggling with their sexual identity. I have gained my skill set by providing support to others, as well as from my own experiences. I am a proud member of the LGBTQ community and the mom of a strong daughter who beat cancer. With all of my clients, I draw on both my life experience as well as my education, and is a strong believer of partnership and collaboration to help my clients reach their goals.

A common misconception is that you need to hit "rock bottom" before you decide to seek counselling. There are numerous reasons why a person may choose to speak with a qualified professional; everything from taking preventative measures to addressing a full-blown crisis. Whether you're in a season of life where you're looking for insight, needing some guidance in making a shift or transition, wanting to change but not being sure how, hurting badly and feeling hopeless, carrying a burden of past traumas and memories, or in a crisis and you've reached your limit - counselling can help.

It can be lonely struggling through mental health problems by yourself. You don't want to burden your family or your support system but you desperately need to connect with someone who understands and who doesn't judge you. I have a strength-based focus which means together we look for what you are doing well and apply similar and new skills to a current problem. You are wired for growth and health! It is in there, but sometimes we need a skilled therapist to help identify problem areas, help us gain awareness, and find what works for the client in any given situation.

I can help you in a variety areas like anger, anxiety, depression,
grief
, life transitions, religious deconstruction, stress and trauma.
There are many differing messages of who to be and it can be easy to lose connection to the truth of who we are. We are continually shaped and impacted by relationships, life experiences, trauma, and our worldviews. As well, our own mental health can rob us from living authentically. As a therapist, I value the unique identity and experience of each person I work with, welcoming individuals of diverse backgrounds, identities, cultures, and spiritual orientations. It is my desire that you experience a warm, supportive therapeutic relationship with me where you're encouraged to be the truest expression of yourself.

Grief Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
