Hi there! I'm a Second-Generation, Asian-Canadian, and Registered Clinical Counsellor with my M.A. in Counselling Psychology from UBC. I often work with individuals who are navigating complex emotional challenges where problems vary from being clearly defined (ie. feeling overwhelmed or "stuck"), or unsure of what is exactly "wrong." My approach involves developing a therapeutic relationship where we can work together supported by compassion, non-judgement, and intention. The goal is not to "fix" people but to support them in developing adapting strengths to best work for them moving forward.

Life is full of discouraging problems and it's easy to get overwhelmed, ignore the situation, pretend we don't need to change, or quit in frustration. We might hide who we are from others thinking we are unlovable or push others away so they can't see who we are. Counselling focuses on examining our self, our ways of navigating the world and situations, and trying to make changes that let us live happier, more authentically, and more free.

People often seek out therapy when they are facing pain and uncertainty — as well they should — but working with a therapist doesn’t need to be something that only happens in a moment of crisis or at the breaking point of a relationship. Therapy is also ideal during times of transition when you simply need some extra support and perspective. You owe it to yourself to take time for focus and reflection. Emotional intelligence and healthy coping skills have extraordinary value, and you should consider therapy to be an investment in your own personal wisdom. You are the expert on your life.

As your counselor, I create a calm and compassionate space for you to tell your story. My clients often come in stating that they feel stuck no matter how hard they try to change. Often times they feel tired of the same setbacks, don't know how to move forward or that their past trauma continually effects their present day functioning. Traumatic events push nervous systems outside the ability to regulate itself and for some the system gets stuck in the 'on' position causing anxiety, anger, panic or more. There's an overwhelming sense of 'what is wrong with me' with a need to feel more in-control and at peace again.

We often deal with overwhelming feelings and thoughts all by ourselves, such as excessive worrying, sadness, loneliness, powerlessness, hopelessness, and frustrations, making it hard for you to live a wholehearted life, full of meaningful relationships and activities that fulfills your life's purpose. I have successfully helped clients heal from traumatic experiences, families and parent-child conflicts, anxiety, depression, life and work stressors ("adulting"), executive functioning (i.e. ADHD), and sensory processing sensitivities, who are 12 years and older in reclaiming back their hopes, dreams and reasons to be alive.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
