Trauma doesn’t always stay in the past. It can live in the present, showing up as anxiety, shame, low self-worth, a constant sense of being on edge, or painful patterns in relationships. Many people come to therapy sensing something isn’t right, but not fully understanding why these struggles keep repeating. I work with adults and teens healing from sexual violence, domestic abuse, and childhood trauma who have come to believe something about them is not good enough. Rather than asking “What is wrong with you?”, I approach therapy from the question “What happened to you?”

I have training and experience in psychodynamic therapy (an approach that works through early life experiences, unresolved feelings, and patterns that keep us stuck), cognitive-behavioural therapy to identify and overcome negative self-talk, and body-oriented techniques that help people feel more connected and grounded within themselves.
Do you take on too much and feel guilty if you set boundaries? Or maybe you struggle to express your emotions and needs and often go along with what others say or want to do. You’re worried that if you express yourself, you’ll cause an argument or others will think you’re “selfish,” not like you, and leave. Frequently, when we don’t tend to our needs, we experience more stress, anxiety, and resentment over time. We feel alone and burdened by life’s pressures and expectations. You want to feel less weighed down, improve your relationships, and feel better about yourself, but you don’t know how.

You’ve been carrying more than anyone realizes. Anxiety, shame, and old hurts show up when you least expect them. You want closeness, but trusting people feels risky. You blame yourself, feel “not good enough,” and worry there’s something wrong with you. You think that because you’re an adult, you should be able to just “get over it.” You push yourself to move on and try not to think about the past, but it follows you wherever you go. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

OCD-Anxiety/Relational Abuse/Burnout/EMDR: You just want situations and people to be less difficult. You already know that your anxiety, phobias, and OCD loops are reflections of what your body is going through. You are navigating the weight of shifting identities, daily pressures, high-functioning burnout, or the deep grief of losing your best support system or never having one. Perhaps you are carrying the fear, silence, and consequences of relational trauma, abuse or coercive control. But you know you are so much more than this. Somewhere along the way, you lost the person You used to be and are tired of walking on eggshells.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
