Hello! I count it a great honour to walk alongside others as they journey through difficult pieces. My goal in working with my clients is to create a safe space for exploration so that together we can go to the deep places where they might be feeling stuck. I love working with my clients strengths and firmly believe each person has strengths that can help them move towards the change they'd like to experience.

I work with adults who are navigating in-between times and places, relationship struggles, grief and loss, and challenges that prevent them from fully showing up in their lives. I believe therapy is a place to strengthen connection to self, and also locate that self within larger systems. Our environments, cultures, institutions, and lineages influence us in different ways - to find our power, we must understand the world around us, and the stories we live within. My work with couples attends to the individuals and the dynamics between them.

When was the last time you felt a sense of wellness and peace? When was the last time you felt inner joy and equanimity? We all make mistakes and we all suffer from other people's mistakes and wrong done to us. However, we don't have to continue to live with the same pain and loss tomorrow.

Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 17 years with 9 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

Now accepting new clients!
Throughout life, we all move through different transitions: anticipated or unexpected, joyful or marked by grief. These transitions might look like the loss of a loved one, grief, career changes, relationship shifts, burnout, or questioning your identity or purpose.
It’s a privilege to learn about clients’ life journeys and to help them recognize how many strengths and abilities they already possess. As a counselling therapist, I strive to support clients by collaborating together to explore what might be holding them back from living their desired story.

You may find yourself caught in patterns that no longer serve you, disconnected from the life you imagined or feeling stuck in grief. Perhaps you find yourself often overextending to meet the need of others’ while your own needs go unmet. Or perhaps you are experiencing a major life transition.
You may long for deeper connection to a partner & perhaps feel invisible in your relationship.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, unfulfilled, or simply ready for something different—you're not alone.
Therapy can be a space to reconnect with yourself or your partner, unpack and process your past, & move forward with intention & clarity.

Struggles like the ones you are going through are frightening and isolating. It can feel like you are carrying a burden no one else could possibly understand, something that is impossible to put into words, and that feels too overwhelming to face. Anxiety and fear run right through your body and seem to come out of nowhere. Perhaps worst of all, you might be walking around feeling like you have to pretend everything is okay.
