I have a professional background in somatic and attachment psychotherapy with a focus on understanding the psychology of trauma and attachment-based injuries.
If you are living with the impacts of trauma, relationship breakdown, or a crisis of identity, you’re not alone. I have over a decade of experience helping individuals and couples with interpersonal trauma, anxiety, depression, abuse recovery, discrimination, loss of meaning in life, and uncertainties of purpose or identity. My work is psychodynamic, somatically-focused, and supports the psychological growth of clients. I want to help you get to the roots of problems and develop greater self-awareness in the process. I believe that long-term wellness ultimately stems from developing insight into the various patterns of our lives.

I specialize helping those struggling with anxiety, mood disorders, and substance use concerns using trauma-informed treatment. My foundation views all people as being made up of mind, body, and spirit. We all share common pains in life, such as caregiver failures and events that have occurred beyond our control. These experiences change us and can form belief systems that perpetuate a limited perspective on who we can become. People are basically good and no person is "bad", but life traumas shape us into the false self (ego) which we then identify with; finding your true self allows for more authenticity and freedom.

Often it is difficult to prioritize our needs and reach out for help when we are struggling. I can understand that taking the first step towards seeking support is not always easy. I can provide a safe non judgmental space to all my clients. I take my time in completing the intake process and listen to all your needs. I can offer 90 minute sessions as I understand that 1 hour is usually not enough to share all about your issues and build rapport with someone you are meeting for the first time. I hold my clients' hands through this process so they can trust me to help and support them.

Accepting new clients. I am a registered social worker that is passionate about helping women and couples grow and heal. I began my career working with and advocating for abused women. I then transitioned into healthcare where I worked in women’s health, adult and paediatric emergency departments. My journey with women and their families has provided me the honour of empathically walking with them during some of their darkest days. I am also excited to be working with couples as I believe that our personal relationships are often our greatest opportunities for growth and healing.

Greetings fellow earthlings! My name is Amanda. As fellow humans, we can work together to help you through this unpredictable life more easily. We all go through rough spots in life where we can benefit from time to reflect. These times can also be an opportunity to understand ourselves better, and make sense of harmful patterns. Throughout life, we develop thought and behaviour patterns in our response to stress, in our relationships, and in our daily habits. With effective tools and strategies, we can make sense of them, and let them go. This opens us up to a more authentic and healthy life.

Have you ever felt like you needed to do “more” or be “more” in order to feel like you are “enough?” Overwhelmed by guilt if you have needs of your own? Or believe if you did acknowledge YOU in relationships it could end in abandonment, disappointment or being alone? You may have learned to relate to yourself in this way for as long as you can remember and does not mean you are “broken” in need of being “fixed”. When we remove judgment and begin to see our “true self” through the lens of curiosity we get to reconnect with who we have always wanted to be but was too afraid to try.

I understand and acknowledge the feeling of overwhelm and discomfort that some may have towards therapy. This understanding enables me to be genuine and intentional within my work. I enter each relationship with new energy, focusing our time on your unique goals. I believe in the philosophy that we are innately pulled towards health; therefore, I believe in your capacity to move towards a healthier and happier version of yourself.

Now Accepting New Clients! You're a woman in your 20s or 30s with ADHD. You struggle with time blindness, impulsivity, difficulty focusing at work, procrastination, rejection sensitivity, and difficulty managing emotions. Maybe you overextend yourself, and a hard time setting boundaries, or have difficulty saying no. Even if you're not diagnosed, you're pretty sure you have it. You've tried tools to help - maybe medication, maybe meditation, maybe time blocking, journaling and self-help books but you still feel stuck. Often this shows up as problems in our closest relationships - be it with friends, partners, family, or at work

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
