I operate from an attachment-based, emotion-focused, and trauma-informed framework.
Being human is beautifully weird, and painfully difficult. As a therapist, I am less interested in providing pat answers about this human experience, and more interested in creating shame-free spaces where we can lean into its mysteries and learn from it. I believe that therapy can be a transformational experience where we experience change as we are held and seen by another, and it is my great privilege to walk with those who are willing to share their stories with me.

Joyce’s clinical approach is through the attachment-based lens of Emotion Focused Therapy.
It is an honour and privilege to walk alongside people as they navigate times when they may feel pain, confusion, or stuckness. The values I bring into the counselling space are acceptance, an environment where safety can be felt, and collaborating with them to learn about how their distress is impacting them and working together with them in strengthening their sense of themselves and their relationships. In my work with my clients, I also value celebrating triumphs as they work towards being the person they want to be.

When we work together it will be about supporting you in moving out of ways of being that no longer serve you in a helpful way and into a more connected, aware and preferred place. Collaboratively working to understand and shift the impacts that traumatic events have had on your life and building on your energy levels so that you can feel a deeper sense of ease, belonging and happiness. Be it parenting support, family therapy or individual youth and or adult sessions, together we can create a space that upholds your dignity and highlights your intrinsic strengths as we navigate changes together towards a more preferred sense of you.

When words aren't enough. . . Art Therapy uses engagement in the creative process as a tool to encourage self-exploration, and is combined with more traditional forms of counselling/therapy. It is particularly beneficial when working with children, as younger people can be less comfortable or haven’t yet developed the capability of expressing themselves with words only. Action, creativity, imagination and play are naturally more familiar forms of expression and/or communication for children. Art Therapy accesses the above modalities.

My primary method of treatment is attachment-based EMDR.
If you’re feeling tired, stuck, and alone - struggling with issues from the past and worries about the future, know that healing IS possible. Being held back by anxiety, depression, or relationship issues causes unnecessary suffering. Together we can uncover and resolve sources of unhelpful patterns so you can adjust and move forward. Imagine - no longer feeling stuck, no longer believing something is deeply wrong with you. Imagine living fully.

Although my approach is tailored to best support each individual's unique needs, I draw heavily on AEDP and attachment-based theories.
Starting a counselling journey takes courage; I honour your decision to explore it. I take a collaborative and holistic approach to supporting mental, emotional, embodied, and spiritual healing, depending on a person’s unique needs, goals, and hopes. I love walking alongside clients as they grow into fuller, more authentic expressions of themselves and their relationships.

I practice from a relational, attachment-based perspective and intentionally incorporate therapeutic approaches that support my clients as they navigate life’s challenges and work towards achieving their goals.
There is nothing more beautiful to me than the rawness of the human spirit. No matter who we are, where we are from or where we go next, we carry narratives about ourselves that impact our experiences and the way we show up in the world. Humans are social beings, which means that the condition of our relationships directly influences our quality of life & overall wellness. However, many of us were never taught the importance of nurturing a strong and healthy relationship with the self, first. Without this relationship, we may be left wondering who we are, what matters most, and how to let go of what no longer serves us.

My aim is to provide a trusting, nonjudgmental space in which you feel comfortable sharing your story. While there is innate wisdom within all of us, our ability to see the way forward can become clouded when we become overwhelmed. A deep exploration of one’s internal experience can be freeing, and provide valuable insight into (often unconscious) patterns of relating to the self and others. We will work collaboratively from an attachment-based, client-centred orientation. Drawing connections between your past experiences and your present situation will help us identify how best to meet your future goals.

I draw on somatic, emotion focused and attachment-based therapies to broaden your understanding of your experience, help you discover your inner strength and foster self-compassion.
I see psychotherapy as a chance to come back to yourself. When faced with challenges in life we can forget our strengths, values, and sense of self. Psychotherapy offers the chance to rediscover these things and uncover more. Together we can navigate life’s challenges while building new skills and resilience to create a stronger sense of self. The therapy space that we create together is one where you can discuss anything and explore emotions, experiences, thoughts, and behaviours in a space and relationship that is safe, supportive, and dedicated to your well-being.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
