My approach is informed by mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, and contemplative practices. In my work with clients I tend to be open, creative, collaborative and down-to-earth. I specialize in anxiety and relationship issues, often working with individuals and couples who feel lost or trapped in difficult patterns. I believe that within every challenge lies valuable insight waiting to be unearthed. With greater clarity comes the freedom to live authentically and pursue meaningful connections - within oneself, with others, and with life.

Many of my clients come because they are responsible to others but long for more personal connection and wellness. They may be challenged about a sense of self and self-care, or they're anxious/insecure about work and life moves and family juggling. Many have been through significant grief and trauma. Parents want support in helping their children to grow holistically with a sense self agency, cultural fluidity, meaningful life insights, and innovative/creative energy. Some come because conflicted family breakups left them needing support to fulfill loving developmental inner pieces that got missed or bypassed in their upbringing.

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better. - Maya Angelou. What does it mean to live your best life and do better? For each of us, the common thread is a deep desire to be seen, heard and loved for who we truly are. Often, the twists and turns in relationships with our families, partners, children, friends, work and other life activities, can challenge us to be our true selves and to know happiness. Our earlier lives create our belief system, many of our behaviours and coping strategies. To enjoy our best lives some of these well-trodden pathways often require significant shifts.

Whether it is burnout, anxiety, depression, substance use, trauma, loss, or relationship conflict; regardless of the source of stress, one thing is certain: it is overwhelming your capacity to cope. Loneliness, social isolation, social injuries and injustices can also contribute to the suffering. Despite the overarching influence the problems are having on your life, there is a wise, compassionate presence in you right now trying to reach out for support.

Therapy could be the key to open your compassionate process of accepting yourself and expanding your mental and heartfelt capacities. Moving at your pace and preference, we explore and identify your emotional, mental and relationship patterns that may seem bewildering or intense now, but with an open and patient perspective, I give you the space to validate, reframe and shift those patterns that no longer serve you. Ultimately, your willingness to meet any challenge or aspiration is a profound act of self-reflection rooted in courage that ripples out into how you live, relate and create in the world.

Hi and thank you looking at my profile. I work mostly out of a strengths-based perspective which means that when we talk about the things you want to change in your life, I'm not only considering what you struggle with but also all the things that you're great at. In my experience, we all have skills and tools that we might not be aware of and part of my role is to uncover them with you. In some cases, we might also want to add to your toolkit to give you more options to deal with life's challenges. In the past, I've helped clients work through depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, communication skills, and trauma.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Counselling Supervisor. My practice is guided by extensive experience working with people coming from various socioeconomic backgrounds as well as many years of serving the most vulnerable communities in Vancouver’s DTES. While my approach is integrative of modern theories and techniques, it heavily relies on Psychodynamic theories and practice. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a highly individualized treatment whose goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptom. It relies on the fact that our personalities are uniquely shaped by several developmental stages.

With over 35 years of experience working with people, I have a deep appreciation of our human needs. These arise naturally as we each strive to become our differentiated authentic self while also forming meaningful, satisfying relationships with others. Whether you are coming to therapy as an individual, with your partner as a couple, or with family member(s), my primary intention is to attune to the perspectives, feelings, and needs you bring to the situation. I am process-oriented in my approach, and have found that creating a space to listen more deeply to oneself and each other creates new possibilities for growth.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
