I use an integrative and supportive approach in my work, primarily using an attachment-based perspective to conceptualize an individual’s concerns.
I am a Registered Clinical Psychologist (R1055), and have completed a Bachelor of Science (Bsc) with Honours in Psychology (Acadia University), as well as a Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology (Adler University). I have worked in a variety of clinical settings including private practice, community agencies, and hospitals. This diversity in population and work setting has allowed me to gain confidence in providing services to children, youth, parents, and individual adults.

I provide holistic psychotherapy and wellness counselling to individuals and couples (18 y/o and up). I recognize that working through difficult life circumstances and/or challenging relationships can be stressful and isolating, resulting in feelings of anxiety, low mood, poor coping skills or a general sense of being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy patterns. To move forward, it’s important to honour our lived experiences, accept that deeper emotions are appropriate in certain situations and build trust in ourselves to know the difference.

Sometimes things in life feel too big and too hard to face alone. Perhaps you're experiencing depression, anxiety, or grief. You might need help navigating codependency, tricky relationship dynamics, challenges with substance use, compulsive behavior, or postpartum support. Maybe you want to explore your gender/sexual identity. Counselling can help you better cope with your struggles, work through mental health challenges, face addiction, and find clarity, hope, and healing. Our time together is judgment-free in a space cultivated with safety, trust, and empathy. I strive to be an anti-oppressive, sex and kink-positive practitioner.

Accepting NEW Clients: When faced with difficult life experiences, feelings of ‘not being good enough’ or memories of painful past events, it’s not uncommon to get stuck repeating the same old patterns as a way of trying to cope. Perhaps you struggle with anxiety, low mood, over thinking, avoiding feelings or doing too much of something (e.g., electronics, substances) or too little of something (e.g., rest, exercise, connection with loved ones). Ideally, you want to feel more at ease with yourself, making choices and decisions that serve your best, authentic interests vs. those of others.

It’s difficult to watch your usually thoughtful child/teen struggling with their big emotions. Your child who is usually wise beyond their years becomes quickly unglued. You’re pretty sure that anxiety, worries or low self-esteem are hiding under the big tears, emotional meltdowns, ‘sassy’ attitude and anger. While you desperately want to be there to support your child and help them through this turbulent time, the accumulation of stressors from the demands of life and parenting through a pandemic make it hard for you to be the parent you want to be in those moments.

We as humans are biologically hardwired to connect with others. Meaningful connection may look different for everyone, but at our essence, our need for attachment with others is innate and powerful. We also have a deep need for authenticity and the emotional safety to be who we truly are. How we connect with others and with ourselves shapes much of how we experience the world and our life. Sometimes, life gets chaotic, and our capacity to connect to our true selves and to others becomes stifled. The impacts of anxiety, depression, toxic stress, and trauma, can place large burdens on our ability to cope and feel well.

Currently accepting clients. I will complete an initial assessment to help determine the depth of your depression, anxiety, unhealthy coping strategies and other areas that may be causing you to feel stuck. We repeat what’s familiar. Even though we know what is dysfunctional, and not working well for us, we repeat behaviours because they are familiar. We can break old patterns and rewire our brain, forming new neural connections so that new thoughts and behaviours become the norm. Go to www.aldergrovecounselling.com for more information.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
