Hi, my name is TJ. I am dedicated to creating an atmosphere of safety and trust where my clients feel heard, validated, and understood. I believe that by creating an authentic therapeutic connection, marked by compassion and empathy, people can move towards the change they desire. I have a deep passion for helping people cultivate awareness of the thoughts and feeling that may be driving their behaviours, as well as compassionately journeying along side those who carry the burden of guilt and shame.

As a Humanistic Therapist, therfore I seek to work in tandem with people to come to understand how their worldview affects life choices, especially when one is in distress. I believe that you are the best person to understand your experiences and needs, my role is simply to guide and support the process. My approach is a balance of helping people to better understand their experiences and offering guidance and support, all the while ensuring I am not interpreting one's feelings. You are viewed as the expert in your life. I will support self-acceptance by providing empathy as you work on personal growth to achieve positive changes.

Waitlist for new clients
In addition to a Masters in Counselling, I have specialized training in attachment-based EMDR, Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Currently I am only accepting new clients from existing contracts (police, fire and medical staff). However, other therapists in my clinic, MindScape Psychology, are accepting a full range of clientele. My job is to walk alongside people who have suffered psychological or moral injury in their line of work. Together we work to seek relief from the ripple effects of trauma, depression, anxiety and addiction and to build the future they want for themselves.

Although I use a variety of different approaches depending on my client's unique needs, I tend to practice from an attachment-based and humanistic approach.
I primarily work with adults and teens who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, ADHD, and issues relating to gender and sexuality. Creating an affirming and secure space for all is of the upmost importance to me. Everyone deserves to be seen and heard as their authentic selves, for this is where I believe the bulk of healing happens. In addition to being a Canadian Certified Counsellor, I am currently working towards attaining my Registered Provisional Psychologist status.

Hey thinkers and feelers - Do you ever feel like you are surviving rather than living in the moment? Are you experiencing anger, sadness, or just want to learn more about yourself? During our time together, you can be the driver and choose the destination. I can sit with you on your journey, guiding and navigating along the way. Let’s find a place of relief. Perhaps a place where you feel connected to your mind, body, and spirit, or a place of power and belonging. Where would you like to go?

I enjoy helping couples who are struggling to find closeness in their relationship; typical goals are usually to improve communication and overall connection. I equally enjoy supporting individuals young and old who struggle to manage anxiety, depression, obsessions compulsions, traumas (i.e., military, car accidents), grief and loss, addictions (I.e., sexual). Goals often become finding ways to process past hurts and learn how to manage their emotions in healthier ways. With trauma in particular, I find people need support to get past stuck points that make it hard to differentiate the here and now from the trauma itself.

Are you looking to speak with someone about your current struggles? Want someone who is caring, compassionate, and non-judgemental, maybe even someone who will challenge you to meet your goals in counselling and to think about things with a different perspective? Perhaps someone to help guide you out of the pain you are experiencing? I believe counselling is a collaborative relationship, it's about creating change, and it's about self-exploration. I also believe the counselling relationship is meant to honour you, guide you, and empower you. It is important to find a counsellor that "fits" with you!

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
