I work with adults and teens (15+) who are coping with trauma and abuse, sexualized violence, anxiety, depression, relational issues, and more.
I believe that we are all capable of making positive changes in our lives. My role as a therapist is to facilitate that process through warmth, understanding, and insight that can help you see things in a new way. We can work together to identify meaningful and attainable goals, improve relationships and connection, develop confidence and self-esteem, and lessen feelings of sadness, anger, loneliness and hurt. After all, the more we understand about our experiences, feelings, motivations, and needs, the more we can make deliberate choices about how we want to live.

The mental health professionals at The Dot are trained in many different types of therapy that can help with issues related to trauma, grief, relationship issues (yes we do couples counselling) depression, anxiety and more.
It's not just you, life HAS gotten harder in the last few years. If you've been powering through, staying strong and carrying on, but now you're barely getting by and you're tired of feeling like you're not really living your life, it might be time for outside support. The benefit of therapy is that it's a time where you get to focus on yourself, to look at your life, and to get an outside perspective on how it could be different. You don't have to just endure, with the right support, you can heal from the past, and move forward towards a better future.

It is possible to find resilience and meaningful new paths - even with difficulties such as anxious or depressed feelings, control over emotions, self-growth and self-development, LGBTQIA2S+ issues, relationship crises, feeling lost or without sense of meaning, past traumatic experience, aging, surviving cancer, or dealing with loss. I care that women find ways to go out into the world to fulfill themselves, that being queer is defined by the story of self, and that the grip of painful or negative feelings is relaxed so solutions can emerge for the self to see more clearly and move more freely.

It is estimated that over 3 million Canadians suffer from mood and anxiety disorders.
The term “Out of the Fog” refers to adoptees coming to terms with feelings and realizations about adoption and their adoption experience. It is a slowly evolving awareness that the reality of the adoption experience may not fit the shiny, happy, and joy filled mold society has constructed. As an adoption professional for the majority of my social work career, I too underwent an awakening about adoption. Part of this process was to acknowledge my participation in damaging practices of adoption and that adoption is complex, non linear, and a life long journey full of a range of emotions.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
