My areas of focus include supporting clients with anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, body image & disordered eating, self-esteem, trauma, parenting, and relationships (both with self and others).
Whether you have landed here because you are seeking support for the first time, or you are embarking on a new chapter of your healing, the first steps in finding a new therapist come with many different thoughts and feelings. Often, the experience can be accompanied by uncertainty of what to expect, perhaps some fear or anxiousness, and even some excitement or curiosity about what you might uncover. Whatever your experience may be, I want to commend you for showing up for yourself in this way and acknowledge the courage it has taken to get here.

Challenging events? Life changes? Overwhelmed? Stressed? Needing balance? Struggling with anxiety, relationships, depression, grief, decisions, performance? Looking forward to getting to where you want to be, to achieving your dreams, to fulfilling your potential, or to simply getting back to "normal" again after an overwhelmingly difficult loss or event? Or maybe even for the first time...Being on top of your game or moving on after challenging events or hurtful experiences is not easy. But there are ways through and I can help.

Hello! My name is Danielle Veldhuis and I am an experienced Registered Clinical Counsellor who has been in the field since 2001 and working as a therapist since 2005. The biggest predictor of whether therapy will "work" or not is the connection you have with your therapist. At Foundations Counselling we pride ourselves on making sure we are a fit with clients before we start the process. With a free consultation, you will get a good sense of who we are. We can then continue to develop a therapeutic relationship that will lead you to achieve your therapy goals.

The body holds inner stories that are trying to be told, but when the mind doesn’t know how to process them, they show up as anxiety, depression, and/or behaviours that directly impact our connection to ourselves and others. You may find yourself at a loss, unsure of where to begin, therapy can be a great place to start. We can work together to explore strategies for challenges, difficult emotions and uncover what lights you up –allowing you to create conscious and lasting change.

**Video and phone sessions available to all BC residents** You may be feeling like this pandemic has upended your life, creating uncertainty, anxiety, or intensifying those feelings that had been trailing behind you for some time. The layers of loss during this pandemic is hard to hold on your own, and may be exacerbating loneliness, anxiety, previous trauma, and negative self talk. You may be considering making a change, and despite the limitations that this pandemic brings, you want to shape your life in a way that feels rich and meaningful to you.

We all struggle at times. Whether it is a low mood that lingers too long, or anxiety that inhibits your life. Feeling like a failure, a bad parent, or like you just do not feel at home in your skin can start to feel like it poisons everything. Confidence dwindles, emotions feel too unpredictable, or stress seems to get under your skin more than it used to. You may be finding that your close relationships are more stressful than they used to be. Life may feel like it’s getting smaller and smaller. You know something has to change. It is time to reach out for help.

I center my clients´ backgrounds, values, and knowledges as the guide to support them in answering any questions they might have. I speak both English and Spanish and like to think that, because of my cultural background (born and raised in Mexico), we can bring a special warmth and levity to sessions making our spaces feel comfortable and safe. Our sessions would involve both exploration and discovery as well as lightness and humour. I am passionate at supporting people who are minorities. I usually work with people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, neurodiversity, self-worth, cultural shock, among other things.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
