In my practice, I support clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, grief, ADHD, OCD, burnout & trauma. I also offer assessment and diagnostic services. Life can be hard sometimes, and my clients often tell me that they have so much going on in their lives that they're struggling to manage their emotions. Many of my clients identify themselves as being helpers, caregivers, and empaths and are having a hard time finding balance in their lives. If you're tired of managing alone and want to find some peace or clarity in your life, or simply want to feel better emotionally, you've come to the right place.

I also treat anxiety, inflexibility, low mood, low self-worth, abuse, and the many types of trauma.
In SMART therapy clients are directed to REGULATE through MOVEMENT and as a result START TALKING so problem solving and healing can happen. Therapy is provided in a specially designed room with specialized equipment, such as arial swings, spinning, weighted blankets, balance beams, fitness balls, person sized pea-pod, body socks, dolphin pillows, and safe cubby holes, and tents. Movement, rest and safety is used to support natural ways of regulating bodies and emotions, facilitate parent-child attachment-building and allow for embodied processing of hurtful and traumatic experiences. It is not at all like traditional play therapy.

I see adult and adolescent clients from all sorts of different backgrounds, and who present with a variety of psychological concerns. However, I feel I’m especially well-suited to working with folks who are undergoing significant life change (e.g., job insecurity, divorce, bereavement, diagnosis, etc.), and who are experiencing anger, anxiety, or depression while traversing the flux. I’m also a keen advocate of mental wellbeing within a number of specific communities, including: veterans and first responders, men (cis and trans), LGBTQ+ folks, expatriates/immigrants, entrepreneurs, and people practicing consensual non-monogamy.

It must be incredibly isolating to experience your anxiety, burnout, depression, chronic stress, or trauma. These issues may have lasting effects on areas of your life, and prevent you from living to the fullest. You've probably tried some strategies to help, but nothing seems to work. Something needs to change, and you've decided that it's time. You realize that the help is there, but it can be confusing and overwhelming to start - because you want, and deserve, the best fit. I want that for you, too.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
