We may engage in drawing and imaginative play; listen to music; take pictures; find our inner superhero; or face fears in a safe space - now including the use of virtual reality!.
Not accepting new clients. When it comes to working with children, youth, and young adults, the most common story I hear is that they do not feel seen or understood. Without feeling safe, they are stuck in a continuous loop of fight or flight responses which can lead to meltdowns, school avoidance, and risk-taking behaviours. Understanding that they are doing the best they can, I aim to help young people find safety and connection so that they can thrive within systems that do not always support living outside the “standard box.”

I’m here to tell you, learning to balance both prioritizing yourself and others, quieting your anxious mind, coping with emotional pain, and feeling more secure in yourself IS possible.
You’re exhausted, trying to balance multiple responsibilities – work, relationship, family, social connections – and feeling like you're running on auto pilot. You have a mind that rarely quiets, overcome with planning, worrying, insecure thoughts, or fear of letting others down. On the outside, you’re managing fine, but behind the mask that you put on for others, you’re struggling. Relaxing and feeling at peace seems wildly out of reach. Alternatively, you may be feeling disconnected or fighting more in your relationship, the busyness of life has taken over and you two haven't been making each other a priority.

Feeling stuck? Worried that things won't get better? Have you been putting off more tasks and feeling further behind? Sometimes the stress from our relationships, responsibilities, work and family demands can feel overwhelming. In times of uncertainty, we may find it especially tricky to manage what we used to manage. Feeling demotivated, alone or hopeless can be common experiences after going through adversities or trauma. We may want company but find ourselves taking a step back or feeling anxious to talk with others. We want to feel better in order to do more, but uncertain with where to start.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
