I believe that painful experience and times of suffering are inevitable and bring us into contact with the most human parts of ourselves. Rather than pushing experiences away, I work with clients to get close and learn from the things that worry them, depress them and excite them. And to watch for the wisdom and resilience that emerges when we do. I see therapy as an opportunity for individuals to know themselves deeply, treat themselves therapeutically, and to recognize themselves as rich, capable and complex beings. My stance is curious and non-judgemental. The relationship that I offer is caring, respectful and often playful.

I have been providing psychotherapy for over 30 years, and I am still humbled by, and passionate about the process of therapeutic change. I always work collaboratively with my clients be they parents, children, teens, adults, or athletes, and I strive to continually engage, diagnose, plan, and treat as effectively as I can. For me, working with children, teens, young adults, athletes, and pre-marital couples is most satisfying because of the preventive and early interventive nature of the work. I take pride in providing a place and a space where clients can relax, reflect, re-commit, and experience their desired transformations.

Thank you for considering therapy at The Cope Clinic. My practice is based upon the belief that the emotional and behavioural issues that confound us can become understood through a guided exploration in a supportive and collaberative therapeutic alliance. My clinical experience of over 40 years has been attained through work with youth offenders, court ordered psychological assessments, residential treatment for religious professionals and work in a private mental health and addiction centre. I have had a private practice over 18 years. Due to the Covid outbreaks, I now see clients only through online methods.

Sometimes, stresses in life can feel overwhelming. You may be left feeling stuck and unfulfilled, like sadness and worry is holding you back. Adjusting to changing pressures and responsibilities while navigating the transitions of life can be so challenging. Often, it can be difficult to know how to find acceptance, and begin to grow and move forward.

“I know I have people who care about me, but I still feel alone.” “People tell me I’m safe, but I still feel scared.” “I know it’s not my fault, but I still feel guilty.” If any of these thoughts sound familiar, you are not alone. It is incredibly common for one part of our brain to feel that things are wrong, even if we don’t fully understand why or know what to do about it. In my personal and professional life as a queer, brown, and trauma-focused therapist, I have seen that therapy can help us process our past experiences and create a space for us to heal.

I work with adults and youth who experience depression, anxiety, work-related stress, self-esteem concerns, relationship conflict, loss, and grief. Knowing how challenging life can be, it is important that we have a safe community and people to assist us when sometimes we cannot manage our experiences alone. Thus, together within therapy, we will work as a team to explore present patterns and behaviours that result in feelings we wish to change and build a strong and compassionate belief of self, exploring new strategies and techniques along the way.

I help people reduce conflict, restore integrity, find ease, confidence and joy in their lives, even when it seems impossible. Through this work, you can harness your own innate ability to face and transform the challenges of living, loving, working and parenting. Together we create a compassionate and courageous space where you are heard and understood within the wider context of your family and environment. Using the neuroscience of emotion, this work addresses problems at the root, rather than focusing on behaviours or symptoms.

Growing up, I just assumed everybody didn’t like themselves. I thought there were people that were open about not liking themselves, and then the rest of us pretending to like ourselves. It was the work I did in therapy that helped me learn there was this wild third option of “actually liking and appreciating myself”. Now I have the joy of sharing that with people as they learn they don’t have to feel so angry, worried, afraid, sad, or guilty all of the time.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
