Life is nothing short of amazing. It's amazing how much we can go through and live to tell about it. It's amazing how fast kids grow up and time flies, how angry a co-worker can make you, how much compassion we can seem to have for others when we struggle to offer any to ourselves. It's amazing how much we put on our plates when all we need is to rest. It's amazing how much we can long for understanding and connection and how much opportunity can be missed right in front of our eyes. It's amazing how short life is. It's also amazing how much we can learn in the time we have, and how little steps can amount to such massive change.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons. For some, therapy provides tools to navigate concerns like depression or anxiety while for others it offers a forum in which to explore and strengthen interpersonal relationships. You don’t need to be in a debilitating crisis to get support. Whatever your reason for reaching out you are deserving of support and I look forward to meeting you to discuss your unique needs. May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you feel safe.

Sometimes we go through hard things and don't know how to handle them or ourselves. Change is hard to make but possible and its easier to do when your being honest and with someone supporting and helping to navigate the things. If you want to do some digging, exploring yourself, connecting some dots, hearing strategies around your automatic responses to things I like to do that too. I support clients in learning about themselves and I especially enjoy working with clients who are diagnosed or suspect they have ADHD. The uniqueness connected with ADHD can be challenging at times but also be an amazing source of creativity!

Do you ever feel really strong feelings like anger, fear, or shame that make you do things you regret? Like maybe you end up doing stuff that hurts you or others, and it's hard to stop? It can make you feel like you've lost control of yourself and your life. Imagine looking back and seeing that things have changed for the good. Picture being able to tell when shame starts creeping in and having the tools to stop it from taking over. You can feel safe knowing that those feelings don't define you. It may still hurt at times, but it won't spiral into a crisis. You'll learn to navigate your days to align with the life you want.

I have 19 years of experience as a Registered Social Worker providing treatment for individuals who are experiencing a range of struggles including; relationship breakdown, stress, anxiety, substance use, and sleep difficulties. Seeking help and support feels scary and it takes courage to reach out. I would like to help you embrace your inherent resilience and expand your inner strength. Existing in a place of distress is mentally exhausting, emotionally taxing and physically draining. There is another way, and you have it within you to discover there is more to life than merely existing.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
