We will collaborate to draw on evidence-based techniques from psychodynamic, Adlerian, Cognitive-Behavioural, Attachment and Emotion-Focused therapies to and deepen the insight and the emotional experience you bring to your behaviour and relationships.
So often the ‘first step’ is the most difficult to take, but seeking out this profile means you’re halfway there. Knowing we need help, even thinking we know how to resolve a situation, it isn’t always enough. The work we do will address the gap between that knowing and actions that can start to make a difference for you. The qualities I try to cultivate in my work with clients— honesty, compassion, acceptance, and even (at times) humour— are the qualities that promote the kind of genuine connection that can support you in a process of growth and change that can gently help you to understand yourself and the path you’re on.

I use Adlerian, DBT, CBT, ACT, body based Trauma therapy and solution focused interventions to process pain, teach skills and create a new, more compassionate experience of yourself and others.
I came into this work through personal experiences of challenge and change that allowed me to connect deeply to what people need in challenging times. I was raised in West Africa, and then trained, lived and worked in the US (UCSF and Adler School), India, and Canada (Queens) during my Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. My global upbringing, diverse training and in-depth trauma experience are the lenses that guide my therapeutic approach. I don’t take it lightly that I have the privilege and responsibility of meeting people often at their most vulnerable and open moments of their lives to help them heal.

Are you finding it hard to connect with yourself and others? Have you been feeling down, disinterested, withdrawn or anxious? Perhaps recent experiences have left you feeling crippled with self-doubt. Or maybe the best way to describe it is simply that you’re feeling stuck? I would like to help. Together we will identify persisting patterns of relating to the self and your environment that leave you feeling this way. We will chart a course to self-awareness and acceptance through alternative paths and choices. Using a psychodynamic approach, I create a safe space for us to explore difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

In starting therapy or returning to it, you may be seeking someone to talk to, psychological perspectives, tools and resources, and change. You may be struggling with depression, anxiety, or any of the long list of names given to conditions we can struggle with. My approach is client-centered as you are the expert on you, and I prefer to not pathologize and stigmatize. My perspective is that there are causes and contributors to the thoughts, feelings and behaviours which we find most difficult, and which can become traits and labels - and yet also - which can be changed.

Adlerian Counsellors

How does Adlerian psychology work?

In the framework of Adlerian therapy, people are motivated by a sense of belonging and community, which drives them to surmount feelings of inferiority so as to contribute to their society; fulfilling these desires can help people flourish. Adlerian therapy proceeds in four stages—engagement, assessment, insight, and reorientation—in an overall effort to understand the client’s past and to achieve their present-day humanistic goals.

Is Adlerian therapy humanistic?

Yes, Adlerian psychology is humanistic; it focuses on the whole person, emphasises their strengths rather than just their symptoms, and centers them in determining how they can grow and flourish. This school of thought informed the work of Abraham Maslow, who went on to develop humanistic psychology.

How long does Adlerian therapy take?

Adlerian therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented form of therapy that takes around 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Of course, some people may be in therapy for a shorter or longer time frame; length depends on the individual and the problem or condition they wish to treat. Clients can ask their therapist about the timeline for treatment before they begin and check in periodically to ensure that they’re on the same page in terms of progress.

Is Adlerian therapy evidence based?

There is not as much evidence to support the effectiveness of Adlerian therapy as there is for other types of therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. But Adlerian therapy may be the right therapy for some people—whether they’re seeking to treat mental disorders or achieve self-growth—especially those looking for a holistic approach that emphasises relationships, community, self-worth, and purpose.
