With over 10 years of experience, I’ve had great success in helping neurodivergent people (ADHD, autism, giftedness) have more satisfying relationships.
Do you wonder if you’re the only one around who experiences the world with the intensity you do? Depending on how stressed you are, it may feel like you’re on alert or like you’re living in a soundproof glass box, cut off from others. You may have a hard time focusing on conversations with co-workers and family. You might have been told you’re "oversensitive" or have "no filter.". You may be feeling frustrated with yourself for not being able to get things together and just move forward, but the pandemic has made everything harder, and it feels like there are always too many moving parts. You want for a space to talk this through.

Healing Waves Counselling mainly specializes in ADHD/Neurodiversity and complex trauma.
Healing Waves Counselling was created to provide people with a different type of healing experience. We live in such a fast-paced society where we are constantly striving to compete, do better, and make more money that we forget to be present. We want people to be able to work through their trauma and have them feel comfortable in their own skin, to reconnect people with themselves, reconnect with nature and the earth. Reconnecting to the environment and our surroundings can be so healing and grounding. We are here to walk with the client side by side on their journey. They are the experts of their own

I have worked with a diverse range of presenting issues within the school system, MCFD, and non-profit organizations, some of which include: anxiety, depression, OCD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, ADHD, eating disorders, stress and burnout, grief and loss, attachment, family dynamics, and parenting psychoeducation.
As a therapist, I am very detail-orientated and will utilize that ability to take the time to get to know your story and who you are without judgment. Others describe me as compassionate, ambitious, and honest, with a side of dry humour. I have experience working with a diverse range of clients including children, youth, adolescents, young adults, and adults.

My client focus is working with neurodivergent people with conditions such as ADHD, Autism and Learning Disabilities. Although these differences can be an asset in many situations, individuals may have difficulty navigating a world not necessarily designed for them. Feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, and low self esteem may linger from years of feeling misunderstood or being under-equipped in social, school or work settings. Exploring your strengths, obstacles and goals allow you to take charge of your mental health and work with your difference rather than against it.

Additionally, I have a passion for working with neurodiverse folks and offer support and expertise in coping with the specific challenges connected to Adult-ADHD.
Hi there, I'm Julia, thanks for visiting! I believe that people make sense of their worlds in uniquely individual ways, so there is no one-size-fits-all counselling modality. I feel that a main ingredient for therapeutic change is the successful creation of a safe, non-judgmental, and collaborative space where you can explore your sense of self and put words to difficult and confusing thoughts and emotions. I take an eclectic and trauma-informed approach to therapy, drawing from modalities like narrative therapy, attachment theory, emotion-focused therapy, feminist theory, and behavioural psychology.

My areas of specialty include complex trauma, ADHD and mood affect disorders.
I grew up in a culture where mental health was not given a priority and there was, and still is, a lot of stigma surrounding it. My passion for counselling came from wanting to give people a space to feel heard, understood and heal; to provide a space for safety, connection, appreciation, understanding and growth. I work with a wide range of populations and concerns, and welcome all who need a space to heal.

I work with teens and adults experiencing ADHD, issues with motivation and meaning, addictions, and trauma.
We are living through a strange and difficult time. Although it might not always feel that way, the good news is that you don't have to go it alone. If you are feeling unfocused, on an emotional roller coaster, unmotivated, and disconnected for yourself and others, I can help. Using engaging, effective, and holistic techniques, we will work together to help you find more resilience, emotional stability, focus, and meaning in your life. My trauma-informed counselling and coaching helps you get off the roller coaster, find out who you really are, what you actually want from life, and where you want to go next.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
