In the roles of mental health nurse, counsellor, educator, program developer, and lecturer (Uoft) I come to my private practice with 31 years of clinical experience working in the world of people suffering with mental health, trauma, grief and addiction issues.
Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Is it intolerable to be around people yet painful to be alone? Are you in awe of your own circumstances? If these are some of your thoughts and fears I am here to listen and help. We become powerless and hopeless with our perceived loss of choice. Reaching out can be the first step to untangle the myths that you have created about yourself, others and the world around you. Through sharing and finding a new voice, curiosity can be renewed and with that journey - hope. You no longer have to be held hostage by your feelings, actions, thoughts or relationships. Compassion is key.

I also help my clients conceptualize one's substance use and personality disorders as a way learned way to survive.
I always approach my clients in with an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, harm reduction framework. What does that mean? It means that I will always ask "what happened to you?" instead of asking "what's wrong with you?". It also means that I will always respect you as the expert in your own life. Finally, it means that I believe that everyone does their very best to survive and thrive each day–even on the days that we can't see any hope. I am here to be with you, even through the darkest of days, and help you find inspiration and hope within yourself.

Struggling? Looking for something effective? You’re trying. Of course, you want to give it your best shot on your own. You may have a strong foundation you're working from and perhaps something is missing. Stuck feelings of frustration, anger, fear, guilt, shame, and despair can compromise your ability to live well and be the version of yourself you want to be. Everyone wants you to be happy. You do too. My wish for you is not this. It is for you to acquire the ability to work through stuck emotions/thoughts/behaviours, to achieve long lasting change, joy, freedom, and peace. You can BE YOUR FREE and find it with support. CALL.

We often come to therapy wanting to feel better, perhaps to change old patterns that don’t align with the vision we have for our lives. Anxiety, depression, anger, PTSD, or personality disruption, difficulty in relationships and addiction are symptoms arising from deeper core (shame-based) wounds. These problematic symptoms surface as a way to cover up painful, enmeshed emotions that are unseen and unheard. I therefore aim to go to the source not the symptom: I specialize in emotion, in building self-compassion, and addressing toxic shame.

Through my experiences, I've addressed a wide range of concerns, from major life transitions to depression, anxiety, neurodivergence, trauma, addiction, identity issues, and the application of an emotion-focused approach.
Therapy isn't about asking, "What do you need from me?" but rather, "What do you need from yourself?" It's about exploring who you aspire to be. My humanistic background drives me to believe that within every client lies the potential for growth, nurtured through our therapeutic partnership. While the specifics of each client's journey may differ, the common thread is a deep desire to be heard and understood. While therapy can provide guidance, I often encourage clients to take the lead, tapping into their own capacity for change.

This, in turn, can lead to depression or vices, such as substance abuse, excessive shopping, over-sexing, etc.
Confused, drained or ALONE in your relationship? Are you putting the needs of others before your own? Are you changing yourself (like a chameleon) in order to feel appreciated? If the other person becomes your main focus and you modify your behaviors and ignore your needs to keep the relationship going at any cost, you have codependency. Codependents are MAGNETS for entitled, narcissistic, grandiose personalities. The ensuing relationship can stumble along for a LONG time, requiring huge amounts of effort and energy to keep up until finally it falls apart. When it does, you feel betrayed and abandoned (codependent's biggest fear).

I am trained to address concerns including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, mood disorders, OCD, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, significant life changes, marital and couples counselling, substance use and addictions, grief and loss, as well as gender, sexuality, and queer issues.
I work with adults and couples to help them move towards a state of continued growth, compassion, and self-awareness in a way that is collaborative, strengths-based, and empowering. I believe in creating a client-therapist relationship that fosters authenticity, support, and space for both acceptance, and for change. This can begin in our very first session. Together, we can begin to tease apart the adaptive approaches to dealing with and moving through life you've grown accustomed to, and begin to decipher which of these patterns are serving you, and which you may be interested in moving beyond.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
