In my work with addiction/addictive behaviors (including food addiction), I tailor each person's treatment to their specific needs, drawing from a range of approaches, including psycho-dynamic, 12-step, harm reduction and bio-psycho-social influences.
As a Registered Psychotherapist, human being, and author of 'Binge Crazy: A Psychotherapist's Memoir of Food Addiction, Mental Illness, Obesity & Recovery' (2018), I view seeking help as a strength - requiring the courage and wisdom to reach your own truths. My practice, based in Gestalt therapy - a holistic, here and now approach encompassing any and all aspects of your life - includes other modalities to find what works best for you - from creative forms of expression to more structured methods. In Gestalt, you are the expert (on you) and I am the guide to help you explore what needs healing.

Challenges I work with include: Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Alcohol and Drug Problems, Other Addiction Problems, Relationship Problems, Feeling Discontentment and Dissatisfaction with Life, Fear, Trauma and PTSD, Unhappiness, Eating Disorders, Chronic Illness, Work Dissatisfaction, Anger and Rage,.
People come to therapy for many reasons. A person may have experienced a life changing event. Perhaps a loved one has recently passed away. Perhaps there is a struggle with alcohol and drug problems or other mental health concerns. Psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to speak with someone who will listen and understand without judgement, provide a safe and trusting environment and offer professional guidance. Therapy can help you make more conscious choices, reconnect with your feelings and needs and gain more insight into relationships. It can also help you deal with crisis, loss, depression, anxiety, trauma and unhappiness.

I am trained to address concerns including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, mood disorders, OCD, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, significant life changes, marital and couples counselling, substance use and addictions, grief and loss, as well as gender, sexuality, and queer issues.
I work with adults and couples to help them move towards a state of continued growth, compassion, and self-awareness in a way that is collaborative, strengths-based, and empowering. I believe in creating a client-therapist relationship that fosters authenticity, support, and space for both acceptance, and for change. This can begin in our very first session. Together, we can begin to tease apart the adaptive approaches to dealing with and moving through life you've grown accustomed to, and begin to decipher which of these patterns are serving you, and which you may be interested in moving beyond.

I came to Gestalt Psychotherapy after a decade of teaching yoga and meditation workshops in Canada, Greece, Mexico and Nicaragua. I noticed that wisdom practices (such as meditation, yoga, breath-work, and reflection) lead people to face vulnerability and perhaps even pain inside their minds, hearts and bodies. Many people have insights about themselves, but they believe they can mentally figure it out on their own. We are not meant to do all the processing on our own. The therapeutic relationship allows us the support of a compassionate and trained witness so we can explore what is present.

Many people come to therapy with longstanding mental health concerns that fit diagnostic criteria, but many people come to therapy in search of a way to take a small step in another direction; one that will bring them more positive well-being.

I am an experienced therapist with 34 years of practice to draw upon. I will listen carefully as you describe the issues that you need support and help to sort out. Often, an increased understanding of the challenges that you face can be very helpful to move forward in your life. As well, learning some new skills to manage the issues and/or gaining a new perspective on the issues can be useful as well. I appreciate that it is not easy to embark on a therapy course so I make every effort to be supportive and understanding as we build a therapy relationship.

Underneath your anxiety, depression and anger there are feelings that need to be explored, known and expressed. This awareness is valuable and will be the foundation of future possibilities and choices. I will provide the support you need to start this journey and then will challenge you and offer new choices in a way that empowers you. I will help you get more curious about things you haven't paid so much attention to and together we will explore struggles, issues and then new possibilities.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
