I specialize in addiction and recovery, grief and loss, trauma, life transitions, anxiety, depression, relational, and family concerns.
Hi there, my name is Maryam, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). My goal is to provide you a safe space to express how you’re feeling. I am a second-generation South-Asian settler living, working, and playing, on the sacred, stolen, and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I identify as a third-culture kid and know how difficult it can be to feel like you belong, especially while struggling with the multiple pressures of our communities or families.

I specialize in active addiction and in addiction recovery; however, my scope does not end there.
Whatever has brought you here - the weariness of depression, the struggle of addiction, the heaviness of anxiety, the uncertainty of life in its entirety - I welcome you. Whether you have experienced a trauma, are going through a life transition, or just need someone to talk to, someone who will listen without judgement or scorn, my passion and goal as a clinician is to hold the space for you, walk with you through the darkness, guide you to peace and well-being, and help you to live a life you love.

I work with clients who want to find relief from their struggles with the following: depression, anxiety, anger, grief and loss, worthlessness, despair, disordered eating, life/work transitions, addiction (substances, pornography and gambling), and the negative impact of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and poverty. Often in the beginning, people come in feeling overwhelmed and frustrated and may be clearer initially of what isn't working for them or what they no longer want in their life. I believe these feelings are a resource to reveal what you do want in your life, what's important to you, your values, hopes, dreams and commitments.

I have been in private counselling practice for 15 years, and in wellness, personal development and the media for 25 years. My practice draws self-referring, high-functioning adults/couples with addiction, phobia, anxiety, depression and attachment disorders affecting their lives beyond their historical, current or perceived ability of self-control. In couples, I usually begin individually to create safety and self-awareness, then back together towards clear self-advocacy, expression and to build trustful communication. EMDR in the couple context can clear a lot of old trauma and wounded pattern-associations that mire us in destructive relational dynamics.

I work with youth, adults, and families who may be struggling with concerns such as emotion regulation, self-harm, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, substance use, psychosis, stress management, and much more. I acknowledge that being a human in this world can be difficult. We all face complex challenges in today’s society, and these can feel even more overwhelming during adolescence and young adulthood. I work to come alongside clients, and help support them along their own recovery journey.

Since 2006, I have taught mindfulness based interventions to individuals and groups in a community mental health and addictions setting, at health clinics, to health care professionals, and university students, for managing anxiety and stress, preventing depressive relapse, managing chronic pain, preventing addiction relapse, and managing psychosis.
I am interested in working with you to develop healthier coping strategies using mindfulness based approaches to prevent depressive relapse; to manage anxiety, stress and chronic pain, improve sleep, and to prevent burnout. I work collaboratively with you to focus on your goals for change to improve functioning in the meaningful occupations and activities of your life. By learning how to be more mindful during ordinary activities, you can also enjoy your chosen activities more, and live with more ease.

Addiction Counsellors

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
