I draw from various evidence based modalities like CBT, ACT, and IFS.
As a trauma-informed psychotherapist and rehabilitation therapist, I understand the impact that stress, anxiety, grief and loss can have on individuals and families. These impacts run deep and can often affect our mind, body, and spirit including our relationships and self-esteem. I have worked with children, teenagers, adults, couples and families and I believe that every individual has the capacity to heal, grow and develop resiliency. I prioritize the strength of our therapeutic alliance and collaborate from a socially and culturally sensitive lens.

Through the expression of empathy and acceptance, and by providing a collaborative environment that is safe and free from judgment, I empower my clients to face their challenges, discover themselves, and grow to their potential.
Life is full of challenges, and by overcoming these challenges we can learn, grow, and discover things about ourselves, others, and the world around us. Sometimes though, these challenges become too much to handle. Perhaps we’ve experienced a loss, a major change, or a trauma, something that has taken away the sense of control over our lives and we find ourselves stuck and overwhelmed, no longer able to learn from life’s challenges, but feeling helpless to overcome them. For many of us, this sense of overwhelm leads to symptoms of depression and anxiety.

I utilize evidence-based approaches including: cognitive behavioural, emotion-focussed, acceptance and commitment, strengths-based, and mindfulness-based therapies.
We all need support at different times in our lives and I understand that reaching out for this help can be difficult. My therapeutic approach is to connect with you, where you are at, as the first step in our work. From there, we will strive to recognize where change is needed and how to create this change for a more manageable place in life. Understanding your story, respectfully and safely, then creating goals for success and how to get there, will be the direction of our work together. With my primary focus on anxiety, depression, family issues and grief, the ultimate outcome of our work should feel progressive and empowering.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
