Accepting new clients! We often heal best in relationship, and so my primary goal is to create a space where we can work together using what we have both learned along our journey. As I am registered and licensed with The College of Alberta Psychologists to ensure the highest standards of care, I am accepted by most insurance companies! I began my trauma care journey 35 years ago after surving the San Francisco earthquake, working with emergency response teams and teaching disaster psychology. In 1998, I completed my graduate degree in counselling psychology with an emphasis on health and began advocating for teens with ADHD.

Help. Hope. Compassion. Lived Experience. Relationship issues, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, or neurodivergence can make us feel like "less" - less happy, less capable, less focused, less able to be there for ourselves and for our loved ones. But things can be better! It IS possible to experience hope, joy, peace, and confidence!

Some of the modalities I draw from are ACT, CBT, DBT, trauma focused approaches, person-centred techniques, and solution focused practices.
Seeking and accepting help are the first steps in managing your mental health, and I know how hard these first steps can be. My goal is to create a warm and inviting safe space to assist you with these steps, whether this be your first, or continued experience In counselling. All emotions and experiences deserve validation, and I aim to be the empathetic and non judgmental buffer to help navigate the difficult situations life throws at us.

I combine this approach with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and, where appropriate, clinical hypnotherapy.
Hair pulling and skin picking can be very challenging to manage independently - they are highly complex behaviours. Often these Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) result in shame and guilt. They can be isolating and worrisome. You may feel alone, but you are not. I specialize in treating BFRBs. I also regularly work with clients who have anxiety, obsessions and compulsions (OCD), impulsivity, and individuals who lack confidence (work, studies, relationships). As a Clinical Psychologist (22 years), my approach will help you to experience positive change in the short-term, and learn how to sustain this change in the long-term.

Together, we can explore your neurodiversity to help you better understand your inner experience & needs via a thorough assessment, which often leads to increased self-acceptance, a firmer sense of identity, and guidance on coping, resources, communities, clinical supports and so on.
Looking for an adult autism assessment with a neurodivergent psychologist? Feeling dismissed by people who don’t understand medical trauma or how hard it is to stop masking? You have the right to feel accepted, heard, and believed—even during an assessment! I was “late-diagnosed” and understand how relieving a diagnosis can be after decades of feeling misunderstood and exhausted. My assessments are thorough and the options were entirely designed by autistic people, who I routinely work with to refine things. You can do the entire assessment from home and take the time you need. Do a FREE self-screen on my site here: www.ndpsych.com

Picture a sacred space of human connection that invites you to make room for the complexity of emotion and experience, moving towards meaning and personal values. In our sessions, there is the invitation to cozy up with a warm cup of tea, slow down, and reconnect with yourself, practicing self-acceptance through exploration. From a place of gentleness and curiosity, I aim to be courageous alongside you as we navigate the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that seem too big to carry alone. Because, let's keep it real, being human is hard, and healing begins with the permission to embrace our messy, imperfect selves.

Mental health issues can feel like you’re standing at the bottom of a mountain, without the energy to climb it. I believe in using a ladder approach to those mountains - taking each step one rung at a time. Through counselling, we can work on making that mountain more manageable for you. I practice an integrative approach that draws on cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.

Welcome to my profile! If you have ever been told you are "too emotional, too sensitive, or too much" or you find your emotions take the lead in conversations and relationships we would likely work well together! How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
