Couselling is a very individual and private experience. Sometimes people come to a therapist to overcome emotional pain or discomfort they are experiencing; sometimes they come because they want to resolve some inner conflict; and sometimes they come just because they want to become a better person. I try to match my skills with your needs and work sensitively with you to sort out what it is that brought you to me. I use a variety of therapeutic tools in a transparent way. I work with couples and individuals, both men and women.

I help people who are struggling with anxiety, stress management, and burnout move through life with less tension. Change isn’t about lowering your standards or “trying harder”, it's about trying differently. By exploring the underlying systems that create these experiences therapy can help you understand how they are maintained, and how to create meaningful change without losing what matters most. I know that not all stressors can be changed, but I also believe we have the power to respond to them in ways that allow us to live a life that is aligned with what is important to us. Together we can explore what this means for you.

My approach is warm, direct, evidence-based, and rooted in mind-body awareness. I help my clients understand why reactions or behaviors can feel automatic, and how to make meaningful change where it matters. I take an active role to explore the thoughts, feelings, and experiences that shape you, so that we can identify patterns and dynamics that may be keeping you feeling stuck. Together we can help you feel more grounded, more connected to yourself, and more in control of your life. I most often work with parents, professionals, and university students who are looking for strategies to better manage anxiety, stress, and low mood.

Life transitions, daily stressors, trauma, and mental illnesses can negatively influence the way we think, feel, and behave. These factors can cause us to feel "stuck" in old habits and patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that no longer serve us. I recognize that when we are stuck, it is difficult to make that first step towards change and reach out for support. Hence, I acknowledge you for making the first step into finding what works best for you. I understand that you want to take charge of your mental and emotional pain so that you can unlock your utmost potential.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
