Seeking professional help may feel intimidating, but it’s also an incredible act of bravery. As wonderfully stated by Brene Brown, “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen”. In my years of practice, my clinical focus has been centred around individuals with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, stress, self-esteem concerns, relationship dynamics, life transitions...etc.

Hi, I'm Alyssa. I have spent the last 8 years working in the mental health field supporting people with disordered eating, intimate partner violence, relationship challenges, OCD, trauma, ADHD, and Autism. I often find myself working with clients who are deep feelers, "overthinkers", and haven't always found therapy to work well for them. Many of the people I see in my practice have felt like they're "too much" for a long time, and are looking for a way to feel better about themselves and practice regulating their emotions.

I enjoy working with individuals open to delving in to their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. I often see people struggling with negative or irrational thought patterns that can create emotional distress as well as challenges in relationships. The process of therapy may improve emotional regulation and positive behaviour changes resulting in overall increased life satisfaction.

Ever since I can recall, I've been intrigued by the complexity of the human mind. My journey in psychology began as an undergraduate, where I delved into the foundational theories and the more I learned, the more I realized that psychology is not just a subject; it's a lens where we can understand ourselves and others. I believe that every individual's unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to psychological well-being. My approach is deeply personalized, focusing on your specific needs, goals, and strengths. I work collaboratively with you to develop a tailored treatment plan that aligns with your values and aspirations.

You deserve support, healing, and meaningful change. You might feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about who you are or where you’re headed. Maybe anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem are holding you back, or relationship challenges leave you feeling unseen and unheard. Past wounds may still influence how you connect with others and perceive yourself, making it challenging to break free from old patterns. You’re seeking clarity, confidence, and deeper connections, both with others and within yourself. You don’t have to navigate this alone. Healing is possible, and I’m here to help.

As a practicum student through Yorkville University, I am able to help someone who is navigating significant life transitions, grappling with internal conflicts, and seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or the weight of perfectionism, often accompanied by feelings of isolation or disconnection from others. You may feel overwhelmed by societal, familial, or personal expectations and need a safe space to process these pressures without judgment.

In our lives we can have sadness, anxiety, anger, fears, work/ family stressors, negative self talk, and trouble setting healthy boundaries that sometimes are hard to navigate on our own. I want to provide you with a safe space to share and hopefully, together we can begin to find the best place to start making positive change! This type of therapy can also work well in conjunction with other therapy if you already have a regular therapist. Being a Certified Nurse (LPN) Psychotherapist, I can also support individuals with a well-rounded approach to health and can help you to navigate within the community.

Life often doesn’t go as planned & that’s ok! We all experience hard times. Let’s work together to achieve YOUR goals & explore your strengths. I believe you can lead a full & happy life while managing trauma, mental health or relationship stress. I believe in holistic healing. This means helping you to meet your emotional, physical, relational, & spiritual needs. One of my passions is to partner with nature, spirituality/ faith, & animals to create a safe space. I like to think outside the box & ideas of what therapy “should be “. We can be indoors or outdoors? Would you like our service Dog Doug to join our session ?

Life gives us all kinds of challenges. Most of the time we get through things fairly well, but occasionally some of those challenges overwhelm us, such as financial stressors, career changes, burnout, disability, return-to-work processes, and family needs. Or maybe life has simply changed. Maybe you are a student faced with academic challenges or struggling with peer groups. Or maybe you are simply striving to take better care of yourself and engage in life more. This is life and we all are going through something. Counselling can be a caring and understanding space to explore what life has thrown at us.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
