Feeling distant from your spouse? Fighting with your teen? Struggling with anger , anxiety, depression, or addiction? Experienced trauma? I work with a variety of clients, but particularly enjoy problems in which clients that have felt misunderstood or mistreated. This includes working with adolescents, parent-teen conflict, relationship difficulties in both individuals and couples, addictions, anger or anxiety management, trauma, and Borderline Personality Disorder. In many of the clients I see, fear confusion are often barriers to a satisfying life. Healing often comes through gaining confidence in areas one can control.

SunRise Psychology Centre / Winderemere Psychology Centre are well-established clinics in Sherwood Park and Edmonton. We pride ourselves on highly confidential and very discrete services. We have 25 years of experience in the field of psychology and believe our patients greatly benefit from our approach to therapy. As much of our services have moved to online platforms and our practitioners now work mainly from home ~ we have decided to reduce our practice down to our Winderemere Clinic until summer of 2021. We are offering online sessions for patients from Sherwood Park and other remote areas.

You feel overwhelmed or numb and it hurts. The cycle of distressing feelings and fight-flight-freeze reactions keep you stuck. You hold it all inside, but no matter how hard you try, the emotions spill over and you snap at loved ones or shut down. Your mind tells you, "you are not good enough". You avoid taking action and relationships feel like a struggle because it’s hard to trust and let people in but you long to create connections with the ones you love. You can gain this connection! You don’t have to live in the past or in the future, you can learn to live in the present fully through awareness and active coping skills.

Throughout my 13 years working in the mental health field, I have learned that the process of therapy is as unique as the people who choose to take this brave journey into themselves. Challenges and difficulties are a reality of life, and therapy is geared toward supporting you as you address uncomfortable feelings or other Psychological needs as you move toward relief. It is about becoming present and aware in your life from a non-judgemental place. Because wellness is different for everyone, no struggles are too small for therapy.

Life transitions, daily stressors, trauma, and mental illnesses can negatively influence the way we think, feel, and behave. These factors can cause us to feel "stuck" in old habits and patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that no longer serve us. I recognize that when we are stuck, it is difficult to make that first step towards change and reach out for support. Hence, I acknowledge you for making the first step into finding what works best for you. I understand that you want to take charge of your mental and emotional pain so that you can unlock your utmost potential.

"I just want to feel a sense of peace again. I haven't felt joy for too long. I don't know why I feel sad and angry all the time." These are statements my clients often say to me when I am learning about them. In womanhood, there are complex reasons why women struggle. I look at areas like work, intimate partnership/s, friendships, early childhood experiences, female biology, the relationship with the self, and the relationship with spirituality (how to make life meaningful) to help untangle the emotional web women feel stuck in. I gently teach women how to begin the process of healing by looking within.

Life can be difficult. Trying to address these difficulties ourselves may feel overwhelming. I support the individuals I meet by working collaboratively with them in a non-judgmental, supportive environment where goals can be established, and movement towards positive change can occur regardless of where one might be in the change process. I believe in highlighting strengths, and empowering clients to achieve therapy goals. I respect how each person's needs within therapy are unique, so a primary focus of mine is the development of a meaningful therapeutic relationship so I can clearly understand and support those unique needs.

Anger Management Counsellors

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
