I work from a client-centered and collaborative approach in which I believe that individuals are the experts of their own lives and have skills that can be utilized and explored. For close to sixteen years I have worked closely with individuals impacted by trauma and substance use concerns. Further, I have worked closely within law enforcement services. My focus includes those individuals impacted by addictions, trauma, depression, and anxiety. Not only do I process through current presenting concerns, I will also assess early life experiences and relationships.

I was Addiction Counsellor for 12+ years, was a Police Officer for 7+ years .
I work with anxiety, emotional overwhelm and burnout. Sometimes the little things become too much. Maybe you can't get a situation out of your head, are anxious/ hurt by something said or done or have the urge to walk away when you don't really want to. Maybe you want to speak up and set boundaries, release some of the emotional baggage that seems stuck and have more control over your emotions versus them controlling you. Sometimes our motivation is to stop passing on unhealthy patterns to our kids and not taking stuff out on those closest to us.

I work with people with substance use concerns, couples, and LGBTQ2S+ adults. Together, we can identify the root cause of your concerns such as the purpose of substance use, the cause of conflict in your relationship and why the same argument seems to keep happening, or how to navigate a world that seems to be against you. We can work together on those concerns to address substance use, resolve relationship conflict and increase connection, and have a safe space to be you without judgment or fear. I'll work with you to help you achieve your goals, whatever they are.

I take an intuitive and heart centred approach to therapy in the areas of addiction and recovery, spiritual emergency, depression, and generational trauma.
Do you see yourself reflected in any of the following descriptions? You feel an intuitive sense that it is time to connect with your true nature. You need to integrate works with expanded states of consciousness, make sense of deep experiences or you are going through a spiritual emergency. That you are looking for someone who will accompany you with respect in the search for your own spiritual path. You feel fine but you feel the desire to go through a process of personal growth, developing your resources and potential.

20 years ago I began work in mental health as respite care. I later completed my professional goals of becoming a psychologist. It was always my goal to encourage hope and well being in the lives of others who may struggle to find their place. From the moment we are born we search for connection, love, and a sense of belonging. Growing up, in life this journey can be fraught with struggle, trauma, pain, and loss. But there is a silver lining. Amidst adversity we find courage and authenticity. We can find acceptance and the understanding of self compassion and empathy, that leads into true connection with ourselves and others.

When we make the choice to do therapeutic work, it is a significant step in creating change in our lives. It offers the opportunity to heal and become more fully the person we choose to be. The therapeutic process encourages us to be present, compassionate, and open to new experiences. I work from a stance of compassion with the understanding that through compassion for self and others we have the capacity to create change in our life.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
