Hello! I am an attachment-oriented psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, stress, shame, trauma , and relationship concerns for adults and teenagers. My practice is grounded in the belief that we are all hard-wired for connection. I believe that psychological distress comes from experiences of disconnection (e.g., loneliness). We can experience disconnection from ourselves (e.g. shame) from others (e.g. distant), or from a lack of belongingness in the cultures that we live and work in. My practice focuses on helping equip my clients with tools for connection so that they can live more meaningful lives.

Trauma therapy begins with safety and body/brain research using Brainspotting to identify, target and release trauma , including sports injuries/performance, relational trauma , abuse, etc.
Have you experienced trauma that is negatively impacting your daily life? Are you experiencing performance anxiety, blocks, slumps, Focal Dystonia and/or want to expand performance/creativity? Do you have behaviors associated with craving, temporary relief, and long-term negative consequences that you are unable to stop? Brainspotting locates, targets, processes, and releases trauma in the brain and body, expanding performance and creativity, from the source.

I specialize in the treatment of trauma and mental health and addictive behaviours in individuals, while supporting the families that are impacted by them.
Connection to our authentic Self and to other’s authentic Selves is what helps us heal. I’m Brendon Olson, founder of New Connections Therapy where the motto is “Connect. Heal. Live.” I believe that symptoms of mental health and addiction may have some biological origins but are most often coming from well-meaning protector parts of us that are functioning to help us prevent or disconnect from our pain. I help you find your true, authentic Self so you can connect with and heal the pain and lead your well-meaning protector parts into taking healthier roles. I work with the internal system of your mind, not just your symptoms.

Our sessions will be grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) while embodying a relational/ trauma -sensitive lens.
Relationships matter! And within the safety of the therapeutic relationship change happens. With the intersection of my work in education and psychology I routinely support individuals who are navigating a range of educational, mental health, and adjustment concerns (academic pressure, anxiety, self-esteem, relationship, stress, grief, trauma ). My practice also includes working with educators to develop trauma -sensitive practices while reducing compassion fatigue and First Responders/Veterans (and other family members) who are navigating the challenges experienced by the overlap between work and personal life.

I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma , relationship issues, addiction, grief, and issues of purpose and meaning.
As a therapist, it's my role to hold the space for my clients to create meaningful and lasting change. In my experience, people will strive further, overcome great obstacles, and accomplish things they never thought possible when they have someone in their life who can understand where they've been, accept where they're at, and believe in their ability to achieve their greatest potential. This is what I call, 'holding the space.' In every session, I strive to create a comfortable environment that allows my clients to challenge old patterns and experiment with new ways of being.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
