Feeling really worried? Having trouble sleeping? Struggling to adjust to change? I can help. I work with adults to manage unpleasant emotions and thoughts; improve sleep ; develop decision making and problem solving skills; deal with imposter syndrome; and cope with life transitions (i.e., becoming a parent/caregiver, changing job/career, moving to a new place, retirement, relationship challenges). Together, we can make sense of your current situation and determine how you can improve your wellbeing and overall life satisfaction. I have worked with diverse populations and welcome all adults.

Lasting change often starts with developing an understanding of how we think and act during the challenges we face and learning how to respond to the difficult emotions that arise. I aim to collaboratively explore each client’s strengths and current difficulties to help develop and improve coping skills, increase flexibility in their response to stressful situations, process traumatic events, and support a meaningful change in their life. I foster a compassionate and empathetic therapeutic relationship that allows clients to feel respected, understood, and empowered.

"My ideal client is turning their focus to personal growth and healing. We all deserve a meaningful life"... Life is too short to let the past control you, the future to cause fear, to engage in bad relationships, or continuing unhealthy patterns keeping you from happiness. My wish for you is to find meaning in your life, solutions to your problems, while letting go of pain and anxiety. I do not view therapy as a one way street, where you take the role of "listener", and I of "expert". I believe all my clients are the true experts of their lives, and have solutions and hidden strengths to overcome "any and all" challenges.

Through all my personal and professional experience it seems that the foundation for much of our suffering and of our healing is in the context of our relationships with each other. I have found that exploring and unpacking our relationship experience and expectations provides new pathways for healing. I love seeing people's excitement as they become newly aware of the thoughts and feelings of their family, their community, and even their own selves. May we find more hope together. Together may we find your pathways home.

ARE TRAUMA AND EMOTIONAL INJURIES IMPACTING YOUR DAILY LIFE? The reality is, EVERY person has experienced some form of trauma or emotional injury. Whether it happened last week, last month or years ago, these events can leave us emotionally wounded, limit our perspective and stunt our growth and potential. Shame, guilt, sorrow, anger and resentment act as powerful undercurrents poisoning our ability to fulfill our hopes and dreams. Often the root of past trauma and emotional injury (either big or small events) are what poisons the potential for our future. Counselling releases you from the negative impact of trauma!

This journey through life is not always an easy one. We are faced with life-altering challenges regularly and this can cause us to become depressed, anxious, or to suffer from trauma, amongst other things. I can help make this journey smoother and more manageable. In addition to individual therapy, I also do couple's therapy. This is my chance to help a couple who is struggling through one of the hardest relationships they will ever have. I can help. I use the Gottman Method and Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy to help couples become un-stuck.

Hello! I am an attachment-oriented psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, stress, shame, trauma, and relationship concerns for adults and teenagers. My practice is grounded in the belief that we are all hard-wired for connection. I believe that psychological distress comes from experiences of disconnection (e.g., loneliness). We can experience disconnection from ourselves (e.g. shame) from others (e.g. distant), or from a lack of belongingness in the cultures that we live and work in. My practice focuses on helping equip my clients with tools for connection so that they can live more meaningful lives.

After working in psychiatric inpatient care, community mental health, and private practice I realized that I have a deep affection & passion for helping teens and adults realize their potential, create connections, and reacquaint themselves to their inner knowing and self. It is these wonderful youth and young adults who prompted the development of my own private practice, DC Psychological Services, as well as the community-building network of Sister, Sister. Helping youth & adults manage aspects of daily living, trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, & family of origin issues is my specialty.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
