Are you a parent looking for support for your child or teen? Is their anxiety , anger, experience with separation, grief or self-esteem eating away at them or making home life hard? Do they seem overwhelmed or shut down and not themselves? You may find yourself thinking about it all the time, researching tools to try, asking for advice from friends and family, wondering if what you're doing is enough, and even whether they are going to be able to move past this. If this is what you are feeling you are not alone. Many parents feel overwhelmed, worry about their kids future, and wish to make their troubles go away.

Finding it hard to live with some of the issues in your life right now? Relationships, depression, anxiety , the effects of trauma, or the ongoing issues you experience stemming from your neurodivergent brain (e.g. ADHD) can make us feel like "less" - less happy, less capable, less focused, less able to be there for ourselves and for our loved ones. But things can be better! It IS possible to experience hope, joy, peace, and confidence!

I am a Registered Psychologist and have worked in the counselling field since 2009. I work with individual adults and specialize in treating trauma, depression and anxiety (including prenatal/postnatal experiences). All of my experience has led me to understand that no matter what issues people are facing, in order to truly heal, individuals need a respectful, understanding, and non-judgmental listener that is grounded and balanced in their own right. This is what I offer clients in addition to my extensive education and training.

I have been counselling individuals struggling with anxiety , trauma, depression, ADHD, identity issues, abuse, to name a few.
Many people will avoid reaching out for help even though life stressors continue to get in the way with relationships, work, a sense of self, and overall progress and quality of life. Reaching out for support can feel challenging as we face these mountains in life. However, according to a very interesting study, when we face these mountains with another person, the mountain is literally less steep (Coan & Sbarra, 2015). We are relational beings, hard-wired for connection, and we discover and understand ourselves through safe relationships.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
