I am a local Registered Psychologist and the Director of Heartland Psychology, specializing in the treatment of trauma, grief & loss, anxiety, and depression. In addition to working in private practice, I enjoy teaching in the Master of Counselling program at City University of Seattle as an Associate Faculty member. It was the loss of my mother to cancer six years ago that changed how I viewed the world and led me into working with others in their struggles. I am currently offering in-person and video sessions from our clinic in Fort Saskatchewan.

I believe our bodies provide great insight into how we can face the challenges life brings us. Whether this is a new issue or something that you have been dealing with for a long time, my role as a counsellor is to support you during this process. My personal perspective on therapy is that sometimes all it takes is someone sitting with you, in the thick of it, to make personal progress towards the life you would like to live.

Sometimes, being human is hard, but you don’t have to go through it alone.
I offer a non-judgmental, compassionate, and curious space where we can explore your challenges, strengths, and goals together. I believe that therapy works best when it's a collaborative process where you are seen as the expert on your own life.
My approach is client-centred and trauma-informed, meaning our work will always be guided by your unique experiences, needs, and values. I pull from a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as psychodynamic, EMDR, ACT, narrative, and more to tailor each session to you and your needs.

My goal is to help you maximize your fullest potential and to help you achieve your goals. Many obstacles can present themselves in our daily lives that can be overwhelming, confusing, or uncomfortable. This can leave us feeling disconnected from our experiences, goals, and ultimately our lives. By removing barriers that may prevent you from performing optimally, you make space for a bigger opportunity to grow, learn, and develop more self-awareness and to get a closer, deeper look at what you are capable of. Our work will support you in living a richer and fuller life, free from the impacts of experiences that are holding you back.

We all desire a life where we're not struggling with anxiety, grief and loss, PTSD, trauma, setting healthy boundaries, anger, perfectionism, shame and guilt etc. Sometimes we feel no one understands! These are normal human struggles and there is no shame in talking to a professional. We seek help from doctors for physical health so why not for mental health? Healing the body, also requires healing the mind. I am also an EFT (Tapping) practitioner and I love EFT work since it has consistently been shown to be of great benefit, either as a stand-alone therapy or in addition to other modalities. Time to talk, tap or tap and talk? YES

You are feeling overwhelmed by what seems like everything. Most days just seem heavy. You just want to feel like yourself again: calmer, happier, better regulated. You feel like all the relationships in your life both professional and personal seem like too much work. You want to run away but know you will not because you are dependable; everyone looks to you solve the problems at hand. " But what about me?" you wonder. Who is taking care of me? All you want is to have someone that will let you clear your head space without judgement.

Sometimes our life gets pretty overwhelming, leaving us feeling like we are caught in a winter storm without any sight of warmer, brighter days. If your current life circumstances feel like more than you can cope with, I would love to help you utilize your strengths to find your way through this storm.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
