In psychoanalytic theory, "borderline" simply means a level of functioning between neurotic and psychotic experience, and it can show up through many different personality styles including obsessive-compulsive, narcissistic, histrionic, paranoid, depressive, or avoidant.
I practice psychoanalytic therapy, which seeks to illuminate how unconscious processes shape our relationships, inner life, and experience of self: it is for those whose lives bear the scars of complex beginnings with histories not easily spoken, yet deeply felt. What we explore together is not a treatment of symptoms alone. Therapy is a rigorous process by which we trace the origins of your suffering to their earliest formations. The mind speaks in patterns, defenses, and repetitions; with each therapeutic encounter, we arrive at a deeper understanding of these structures.

My intention as a therapist is to help you gain a greater understanding of yourself. This includes an awareness of why you think, feel, and act in the way you do. This type of work often involves exploring the impact of past experiences. These experiences can seemingly be large or small, can impact us years after they occur, and we may not even fully understand how we have been impacted. Gaining insight into this allows you to become free of conditioned reactions and patterns. Then, from a place of clarity and with ease, you can make conscious choices that are aligned with who you really are.

Have you ever believed you could handle everything on your own?
How many times have you pushed your struggles aside, hoping things would just get better — only to find they didn’t?
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal.”
— Thomas Jefferson.
The truth is, it’s never too late to seek change — especially with the right support.
I don’t limit my practice to one area because I understand that larger issues often stem from a combination of smaller, interconnected challenges. Together, we can uncover the root causes of what you're facing and work toward meaningful, lasting change.

You want a LIFE more worth LIVING! Lets create that together! At all times, we are always doing the best we can with what we have: the knowledge, skills, experience and the information we posses in the moment. But, we often judge our "past" selves (and others in our past) from where we are at "today". This can create problems. With guidance, we can learn how our own (and others) past decisions, actions and experiences can create problems for us today. With understanding, we can learn to live more effectively! I invite you to join me for this journey!!

In my practice, I see a wide range of clients: adults, teens, children, adults who have experienced developmental traumas e.g. sexual, physical & emotional abuse (often in the context of their own dysfunctional family of origin), clients with PTSD, couples who are seeking to strengthen their relationship, families looking for new ways to resolve old problems, and individuals who keep repeating the past. Depending on the presenting problem and a client's history, I often integrate EMDR Therapy and Gestalt Therapy and/or Structural Family Therapy. Remote sessions are available to residents of Alberta.

Many clients come to ShiftGrit feeling stuck in patterns they can’t easily explain—reactions that feel automatic, emotions that come on quickly, or beliefs that are hard to shake. They’re looking for clarity, direction, and a therapy process that helps them understand why these cycles keep happening. Many want a structured, guided approach that explores the beliefs, early experiences, and protective strategies shaping how they respond today.

Just seeing what’s out there? Or, has maybe someone (ahem) insisted you do it? Have you been white knuckling your way through stress, relationships, work, or whatever the hell this past year has been, and it’s finally starting to wear on you? It can get exhausting pretending like everything’s “fine.” If you’re feeling disconnected, irritable, shut down, or just kind of stuck in your own head — you’ve come to the right place. I’m a trauma therapist; whether you’ve been through something recent, or have experienced past neglect or abuse (or just something really painful), I can help.

Trauma can leave an imprint on our lives, but it does not have to be permanent. It may alter your foundation and leave you lost, angry, confused and in unbearable pain. I believe that choosing to rebuild this foundation through therapy is a courageous step in healing. It is not always an easy journey as we need to survey the land, start digging, install the foundation and work with any arising obstacles. This can be an exhausting and scary process but we will work collaboratively at your pace and create a resolution that fits for you.

What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?
Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.
When to seek treatment for personality disorders?
Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.
How long does therapy take for personality disorders?
The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specialises in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.
Can therapy help people with personality disorders?
Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
