Hi there! Firstly, thank you for being here. As a psychologist, I believe in a collaborative and client centred approach to therapy. I have a passion for helping others navigate life transitions, supporting emotional regulation, empowering personal confidence/self-esteem, and encouraging a healthier mindset by re-authoring the narratives and negative core beliefs we hold. I also love to incorporate humour in my practice! I am an advocate for healthy communication and holding space for one another. I work with all age ranges from adolescents to adults, and strive to create a non-judgmental safe space.

What is the MORE you are searching for? Many people seek out therapy because they are tired of their lives or they want to get rid of the words in their head that beat them down. They want to find a better them. More can mean a number of things- joy, confidence, motivation, creativity, or boldness (to name a few). Creating change is not easy or fast, but we have to start somewhere. One of the best feelings is being seen and heard for who we are- it feels so good, yet can be so scary at the same time. It may feel out of reach, and that's okay.

My name is Emily and I really enjoy working with a diverse range of clients. For me it is important to explore the needs of the client and develop a collaborative approach to addressing their concerns. In this way the paths we find forwards are not based on what I or others think they should do, but instead developed together, reaching towards goals that are thoughtfully developed.

Many people struggle with confidence and are unable to fulfill their goals for relationships, work, and personal fulfillment. Understanding how your core values and beliefs impact aspects of your life such as work, relationships, and overall fulfillment can give you the power to overcome these struggles. Through learning to accept and love yourself fully you can move past shame that is likely impacting how you feel and behave. Through awareness of your power to change the meaning you give to events within your childhood, you can become free from limiting beliefs.

My approach is founded on two basic beliefs: 1) people want to be their best selves; they may just need some help finding what their best self looks like, 2) humans are social animals; our brains are built for connection - we need safe relationships to feel like we can heal, deal, grow and change. Most importantly, I believe that people are resilient. I operate from a trauma-informed and person-centered approach. I aim to listen non-judgmentally and with care. Within sessions, I intentionally strive to provide a warm presence – which is determined by how I am, not what I do.

How can I find a therapist in Edmonton?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
