Imagine the life you desire: a life free from overwhelming distractions and constant stress. Does the piercing sound of your morning alarm fill you with dread? Are you relying on coffee, snacks, or endless social media scrolling to muster the energy to face each day? Consider this: embarking on a transformative journey often starts with a single, courageous step. Much like embarking on a thousand-mile journey, counselling is your stepping stone towards a more fulfilling life. It takes immense courage to acknowledge when aspects of your life are no longer serving you, and I commend you for taking this important first step.

It can feel overwhelming when you are someone who is usually content and productive in life and find yourself struggling to get out of bed, leave the house, or be in relationship with others. It is important to know that we all struggle with our mental health at some point in our lives and it can be difficult to take the first step and seek help. If you are ready, our work together will be to build on your strengths and develop the insights, knowledge, and skills necessary to get relief from your suffering.

I aim to support individuals & families to improve lives that have been negatively impacted by drugs, alcohol, gambling and process addictions. Many people who struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress, feel embarrassed or stigmatized. Others who struggle with domestic violence, relationship issues, faith based struggles, addiction issues, suicidal ideations, and anger management issues feel alone and unsure of who they can speak to. The foundation of my counselling practice is being compassionate and non-judgmental. I provide a person-centred practice which is about the client defining their own goals. I assure my clients they are in a safe place, confidentiality upheld, validated, and their life story and experiences honoured.

“I used to think that the brain was the most wonderful organ in my body. Then I realized who was telling me this.” (Emo Philips) Often our brains are wonderful! Also, wonderful brains do not stop us from having concerns or problems. Sometimes we are in the position of knowing some things, and also feeling and behaving in different ways - perhaps ways that are negative, not helpful, or destructive. The people I work with have a wide variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, addictions, relationship issues, challenges with “getting going”, specific problem behaviours, as well as other issues.

A warm welcome! I offer support from a person-centered and holistic view. I believe that connecting to the body from a state of internal safety, noticing sensations, and learning to regulate emotions and responses through practicing self awareness are powerful resources to work through internal struggle. I provide a safe space rooted in empathy, understanding, and I am committed to empowering individuals on their journey toward personal growth and well-being. “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” - Viktor Frankl

Do you have thoughts that scare you or make you feel ashamed? Do you wonder why you're having them and what they mean? Does it feel wrong/irresponsible/risky/dangerous to ignore the thoughts? You try to solve, figure out, and get rid of the thoughts quickly. You argue with the thoughts, but your mind argues back. You spend so much time distracting yourself and avoiding anyone or anything that triggers them. You’d give anything for the horrible thoughts/feelings to stop, but no matter what you do they keep coming back. You just want to feel better and live a normal life. If this sounds like you, I might be a great therapist for you.

Choosing to embark on a therapeutic journey is no minor step. It demands a mix of emotions, time, and finance. More than anything, however, it requires courage. When someone musters the strength to seek help, it's not merely for the sake of talking. They are looking for a professional who is fully invested in their wellbeing.I deeply believe in the inherent potential every individual possesses to effect positive change in their lives. My mission is to equip you with the skills and tools necessary to realize that change. My focus is on adults, including (but not limited to) Veterans, First Responders, and those recovering from MVA.

Whether we believe it or not, our lived experiences have created a core belief about ourselves and influences a core language we use to describe ourselves, which prevents us from being our authentic self or the desire to change. Here's a truth, you have permission. You have the permission to change, to grow, to develop, to advocate for what you need, create new habits and, to unlearn and learn again. The beauty in the journey is you don’t have to do it alone and I’m here to journey with you.

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
