Accepting clients - Do you overthink and judge everything you say? Are you reliving past or future events and feel stuck in worry and stress? Or, are you wanting to break family cycles and heal patterns? I support
women
as they reclaim their lives before the hurt — before the assault, eating disorder, or toxic relationship. Before anxiety and fear settled in. For many of my clients, unsupportive relationships have been their norm, and they identify with having absent, abusive, or emotionally unavailable parents and partners. Therapy can help you get to know yourself better, regain a sense of self and agency, and heal from the past.

I have been helping men and
women
make changes in their lives for the past twenty-six years. The people I work with are often dealing with anger, aggression, depression, anxiety, trauma and different forms of acting out (e.g., gambling, addictions, etc.). I provide a safe space to explore what the problem might be and different strategies for resolving problems. Many of my clients are survivors of childhood trauma and are dealing with abuse in their adult lives. I have significant experience working in a cross-cultural context, particularly with First Nations people, Lesbian
women
and gay men.

While I work with a variety of concerns, I am especially passionate about empowering
women
to manage anxiety, stress and burnout, heal from loss and traumatic experiences, and set boundaries in relationships, in both their personal and professional lives.
I help people cope with the everyday and exceptional challenges of life, experience less suffering, and engage more fully with the present moment. Therapy provides a unique relationship which gives you the opportunity to freely evaluate the thoughts and feelings you carry, particularly those that no longer serve you. My role is to help guide you towards your internal strengths, self-acceptance and trust.

Even professional
women
get stuck sometimes.
Welcome! Right about now, things don't feel right. You strive to do your best, but lately, you've been feeling stuck. No one would know it b/c you present really well & seem entirely put together on the outside- but privately, you're hurting on the inside. The truth is, things don't feel right in one or more areas of your life. You're tired of dealing with self-doubt & negative thoughts, feeling stressed & overwhelmed, and not being confident and happy like you want. You might even be tired of carrying around that internal pain you've been trying to keep tucked deep inside but secretly wonder if you can feel better.

A movie I watched recently resonated well with me as a
woman
of color. Some of the themes identified were of strength, courage, resiliency, growth, and empowerment. I value these themes and they are ones I try to bring into your therapeutic journey. I practice using an eclectic approach (CBT, CBT-i, DBT, solutions focused, motivational interviewing, ACT, EMDR. Certain distressing experiences may give rise to limiting beliefs that we may hold about ourselves, and through EMDR we can allow processing and desensitization to take place of these events, giving room to more adaptive beliefs about oneself.

Life experiences can hinder our emotional, mental, or spiritual growth, making it difficult to move forward in an effective way. My experience has been working with teens, men, and
women
and their issues with trauma, addictions, OCD, eating disorders, and anxiety. I am passionate about helping my clients understand how the brain works and taking a strength-based approach to developing skills. The research focus of my thesis was on resiliency in Indigenous adults with FASD. Together, we can find the power within you.

Hi, I am Candace. I specialize in working with adult
women
who have experienced relational trauma, using both individual and group therapy. The truth is most of my clients do not use the term "rational trauma" to describe what they have experienced. Instead, they explain that they have decided to reach out for help because they desire to take control of their lives after experiences such as intimate partner violence and maltreatment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, workplace bullying, being betrayed by someone they trusted, childhood trauma and coping with the impact of being in a narcissistic abusive relationship.

As a white
woman
with a disability, I have experienced both privilege and marginalization, and my lived experiences influence my work.
Hi! I'm Gabrielle and I am a registered provisional psychologist. My approach to therapy is relational, meaning that I prioritize developing a connection with you by listening, asking questions, and usually some humour. I incorporate aspects of feminist and narrative therapies, through which we can explore how personal and cultural narratives may influence your mental health and well-being. I work with folks who experience distress in many forms including anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, trauma, self-esteem, boundaries, grief, and anything else that's on your mind! I also do adult autism assessments and psychoeducation.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
