I work with people individually, in parent dyads, in or
family
groups.
Many times, people struggle with issues but are not sure what to do about them. Is counselling the right approach? Psychotherapy? Coaching? Maybe just coffee with a trusted friend seems like the best solution at times, but maybe you're not feeling sure about that either. What I usually recommend for people experiencing challenges but who are uncertain about what to do is to book a consultation session to talk about what's going on and some options or recommendations for what to do about it. Sometimes one consultation session is enough. Three-session consultations also are available for working through issues in more detail.

Hi! I'm Gabrielle and I am a registered provisional psychologist. My approach to therapy is relational, meaning that I prioritize developing a connection with you by listening, asking questions, and usually some humour. I incorporate aspects of feminist and narrative therapies, through which we can explore how personal and cultural narratives may influence your mental health and well-being. I work with folks who experience distress in many forms including anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, trauma, self-esteem, boundaries, grief, and anything else that's on your mind! In addition to extensive training, my work is shaped by my own life experience, including separation/divorce, blended
family
life, grief/loss, parenting and major life transitions.
“We’re all too vulnerable to face the hugeness of life alone. It doesn’t make sense to do that… we need each other” (Sue Johnson). I believe that meaningful connection with ourselves and others is central to our wellbeing. Unfortunately, painful past experiences and unhelpful patterns can sometimes get in the way. Relationship struggles can erode our self-worth and leave us feeling anxious, depressed, exploited, and alone. They can also create ripples that disrupt other important parts of our lives – our health, work, and kids. You're here because you’re wanting change. I'm here to provide a safe space for your journey to change.

“We are relational beings" and we discover ourselves in our relationship to others. When these relationships don’t feel “secure”, we may feel alone or in pain, causing personal struggles to be more difficult. My experience in counselling those who face marital,
family
, and parenting struggles, offers ways to overcome the barriers that get in the way of reaching out to those you love. I offer my authenticity, a supportive place to reflect and discover new ways of viewing yourself to create positive change.

I work with children, teens, adults and couples facing life transitions, coping problems or mental health concerns. Depression and anxiety is very common, but I also work with loss, health concerns and
family
problems.Therapy is about change, but it is not about changing who we are. The person we are meant to be has been here all along. Sometimes we need help to reconnect. I work with my clients to explore patterns of behavior and thought that can keep us in small and narrow places, and to reconnect to our wiser, balanced and more joyful self.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
