I use a lot of different therapy approaches in my work, but I love using Internal Family Systems (IFS), Person Centred Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) the most.
Hi, I'm Paige (she/her)! If you are starting to unpack the harm you've experienced at the hands of a religious institution/high control group, struggling to exist within a world that prioritizes harmful systems, profits, and power over people, or healing from an experience of sexual violence, I could be a really great fit. As someone with lived experience of mental illness, I know how hard it can be to sort out what you’re needing. Regardless of what you’re struggling with, I am someone who will accept you as you are, laugh with you, and support you in making choices and changes that work the best for you. You're the expert!

Photo of Naomi Isaac - Queer Spirit Counselling and Therapy Services, MA-CP
As a queer counselling therapist with a strong background in theology and evangelical Christian culture, I am uniquely able to offer empathy and understanding to those who are navigating the process of understanding and integrating their sexual and/or gender identity within the context of their Christian faith and family.
My name is Naomi Isaac (she/her), and I am a queer therapist who specializes in working with individuals who may be struggling to integrate queer and spiritual identities. Queer people from religious faith backgrounds (and their families) are often marginalized by both the queer community and their faith community, and may feel alone in the struggle they may have to understand their queerness in the context of their faith or religious upbringing. Having a therapist who is familiar with both worlds, who will respect all aspects of their identity, is crucial in working through these unique challenges in counselling.

When you had supportive friends or family, that made life more enjoyable.
You wake up wondering if there's even any reason to get out of bed. Life blows, you have no friends, the only feelings you have are negative. You feel anxious, guilty, sad, and weak. This is not the life you dreamed it would be. Your not sure how your life got to this point, but even worse, you have no idea how to crawl out of this pit your in. Even if you did know what to do, would you have the strength, or desire to do it?

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
