My approach promotes well-being on multiple levels and includes somatic therapy,
EMDR
, hypnosis, mindfulness, as well as more traditional CBT and solution-focused talk therapies.
Sometimes, the more you try to hold it together on the outside, the more you fall apart on the inside. If you're feeling anxious, depressed, devastated, confused and overwhelmed by daily responsibilities, life transitions, relationships, grief or trauma, you're probably striving to get back on your feet. It happens to all of us and even the strongest can benefit from taking time to explore (often hidden or forgotten) inner resources. It's not a sign of weakness to seek support, but of wisdom: when what used to work no longer does, it's time to explore alternative options.

I work primarily with a somatic-based, trauma-informed and attachment-centred process: Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT),
EMDR
Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT).
I provide a safe place to heal and change, with an open, warm and practical approach to counselling. Sometimes clients jokingly say, 'I have issues'. Well, we all have 'issues'. When these issues become overwhelming, I help you gain the skills necessary to move forward. I think expressing both "negative" and "positive" emotions are important to well-being. I consider therapy a success when you leave with increased clarity about the issues that you are dealing with, feel hopeful about addressing the challenges holding you back, and feel confident practicing new skills that you have added to your personal skill set.

It can be really hard to prioritize yourself, especially if you are a parent or caregiver. Caregivers need care, too, but many things can get in the way of this: lack of supports (systemic and personal), an individualistic culture, guilt and shame, lack of modelling (i.e. "how do I even do that?"), unresolved trauma & attachment issues, burnout & time poverty. I use traditional talk therapy and Sensorimotor (body-focused) Psychotherapy, Art Therapy &
EMDR
to help you slow down and attend to yourself. I believe that a joyful, creative life where you honour your own needs and deeply care for others at the same time is possible.

Accepting new in-person clients. My approach is based on the foundational belief that people have an innate ability to move towards healing. I also know that it takes courage to ask for help, but please know that we were never meant to do this alone. As humans, we are hardwired for connection! I genuinely see the good in everyone, and hope to work collaboratively with you to uncover your authentic self and build upon your potential.

I rely on an integrative approach to therapy that combines elements of CBT, ACT, DBT, EFT and
EMDR
.
I am a Registered Provisional psychologist with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta. My approach to therapy emphasizes the importance of confronting our painful emotions and experiences from a place of safety, curiosity, and honesty. I work with individuals and couples as well as teens and youth. I also have a special interest in working with men. I believe that men are often under resourced when it comes to accessing, expressing, and understanding their emotions, often leading to painful, yet avoidable, experiences.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
