Throughout my 14 years working in the mental health field, I have learned that the process of therapy is as unique as the people who choose to take this brave journey into themselves. Challenges and difficulties are a reality of life, and therapy is geared toward supporting you as you address uncomfortable feelings or other Psychological needs as you move toward relief. As a non-judgemental member of your team, we will look at using the skills and strengths you already have to become more present and aware in your life. Because wellness is different for everyone, please know that no struggles are too small for therapy.

I work with clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, interpersonal/relationship difficulties, adjustment issues, personality disorders, and struggles with meaning, self-actualization, and career. I focus on helping clients better understand how past experiences, avoided emotions, and interpersonal patterns may be contributing to and maintaining their distress and suffering. Through building awareness in the context of a non-judgmental and unconditionally accepting therapeutic relationship, clients are able to develop more flexible and adaptive ways of coping, learn new ways of relating to others in their lives, develop skills, and experience deeper connection, acceptance, and respect for themselves and their emotions.

20 years ago I began work in mental health as respite care. I later completed my professional goals of becoming a psychologist. Today my focus is Trauma and Addictions with youth and adults and experience with Veterans and First Responders. From the moment we are born we search for connection, love, and a sense of belonging. Growing up, in life this journey can be fraught with struggle, trauma, pain, and loss. But there is a silver lining. Amidst adversity we find courage and authenticity. We can find acceptance and the understanding of self compassion and empathy, that leads into true connection with ourselves and others.

I love working with trauma and have specialized experience with first responders. I get how it changes the way you think, feel and act so can work with emotional dysregulation and behavioural issues too. Addiction is common, and often a way to cope, and it's the underlying issues I enjoy nurturing and healing. At times, I work with people struggling in relationships, sometimes with themselves, or as they adjust to relational changes or losses like grief. Other times I support people as they navigate life transitions like career changes, pregnancy or parenthood, health issues or effects of aging.

I believe people experience psychological/emotional suffering because they are not able to relate deeply enough to certain aspects of themselves. This disconnection causes "symptoms" and pain. Depression and anxiety are the most common, but they can further develop into problems with identity, addictions, anger, suicidal feelings, despair, problems in relationships, personality disorders etc. To relieve suffering and to further ones personal development, a deeper connection with self is needed. The clients I usually work with are people who feel thwarted in their attempts to be happy, have satisfying relationships, achieve success.

Experience has taught me that this is the really hard part for you. You're likely feeling awful in some way. Maybe something in your life has become too much, you're feeling out of control and desperate, or you might be stuck in some way and want ideas on how to move forward. You are browsing therapist profiles and eager for the right support. What qualities and qualifications can you feel confident in? How will you know that it will work and is right for you? What if you're missing out on just the right kind of therapist that will really and truly make a difference for you. It's a lot.

I feel like I was born in the construction trades. At a young age I worked at height (Rope Access), in remote areas, and in all environments. I wanted the skills to respond to any emergency at any time, this desire lead me to pre-hospital emergency medicine (EMR), wilderness first-aid, and rope rescue training. My work and personal experiences from this time left me feeling isolated, dreading human interactions, and losing my love of learning and mastering new skills. It was this experience that compelled me to address my own mental health and further lead me to complete a Diploma in Transpersonal Counselling Psychology.

Deciding to attend therapy often happens at very difficult times in life and it can be challenging to meet with a stranger to discuss personal issues. I work hard to create a space where a client can feel comfortable enough to engage in the therapeutic process and feel like they are actually getting something out of therapy, more than what they could get from having a chat with a good friend. I am able to offer a client a sense of partnership; that we are continually working towards change. I know clients do better when the therapist is present and engaged and so I work to give you a sense of who I am in our interactions.

Throughout our lifetime it is inevitable that we will be faced with hardships that disrupt our perspectives, relationships, and typical ways of being. As a shared human experience, you do not have to take on these challenges alone. I truly believe people are intrinsically resilient and working together, your capacity to grow and overcome is possible. My goal is to provide you with a safe space to navigate life's challenges without judgement and with the utmost empathy, compassion, and respect.

My father struggled with alcoholism and I promised myself I would never follow his path. But I'd learned as a young teen and adult that substances offered an immediate escape from emotional pain and bad memories, and I did follow his path. In my early 30's I started counselling to find a way to heal from past abuse and trauma, learn healthier ways of managing my emotions, build self-esteem and enter into truly loving relationships. In recent years I expanded to work with couples. It is my pleasure today to walk with individuals and couples as they begin their own healing journeys toward happiness and fulfillment.

Feeling stuck? Worried that things won't get better? Have you been putting off more tasks and feeling further behind? Sometimes the stress from our relationships, responsibilities, work and family demands can feel overwhelming. In times of uncertainty, we may find it especially tricky to manage what we used to manage. Feeling demotivated, alone or hopeless can be common experiences after going through adversities or trauma. We may want company but find ourselves taking a step back or feeling anxious to talk with others. We want to feel better in order to do more, but uncertain with where to start.
