Change can be scary but even small changes can make a big difference. I offer you a safe space where change can happen at your own pace & where you can bring your problems, fears or pain to work through in a supportive environment. The addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, or any other issue you are facing can be the initial thing that brings you into therapy, but we won’t just put a band-aid on the symptom. We will get to the underlying root of the problem & heal it where it started. I use the word “we” because it is a collaborative venture, we work together to create change. (I work with both individuals & couples)

Life can be beautiful and gut wrenching and everything in between. We often experience a full range of all of this. Sometimes these lived experiences leave us feeling stuck, frustrated, empty or painfully striving for deeper meaning in life. Sometimes we can experience what feels like a complete world collapse. Anxiety, depression, lost spiritual connection and agitation start to feel like the new normal. This doesn’t have to be - connecting to counselling is one support open to you when life seems this way.

At other times, challenges become overwhelming and turn into problems that affect our work, relationships and overall outlook on life. I am a dedicated and experienced therapist with the belief that problems are a natural part of life and when dealt with in healthy ways can provide opportunities for growth and adaptation. My approach is collaborative in nature and based on the assumption that we all have the inner resources required to deal with problems and live happy, healthy and meaningful lives.

I deeply believe that the body knows what needs to be healed and holds the keys to that healing. Our systems, however, are so good at keeping us safe that we often can't access those keys alone. I use a range of tools to facilitate that healing, including conversation, meditation, visualization, mindfulness, IFS, AEDP, and sometimes energy work depending on the individual I am working with. I aim to be feminist, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive, which means the client is always the expert on their own experience. We work collaboratively using a range of tools to find the right path forward for you.

I fundamentally believe that all human beings desire to feel connected, to belong, and to feel loved. However, throughout our lives we are sometimes led astray from this. Somewhere along the road we have become disconnected, both from each other, as well as from ourselves. My goal is to have the therapy room be a safe space to repair your relationship with yourself, as well as those around you. My experience has led me to develop a unique perspective that is at its core non-judgmental, person-centred and strengths-based.

I am a registered provisional psychologist in Alberta. As a therapist who uses an attachment-based lens, I believe hurt is often rooted in old wounds caused through relationships across the lifespan. As such, I also believe healing happens through relationships and we will work together to meet your goals and help you move forward on a path of healing. I take a humanistic and strengths-based approach in which I believe you have inherent value simply by being human. All individuals regardless of where they are at in their journeys or what struggles they experience have strengths that can be built on to move towards an authentic life.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
