I aim to help intercept and turn life back to the preferred direction of each individual and their families. I work with adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families from all walks of life. I support individuals by identifying their unique needs, creating tailored goals, and building upon their strengths. Part of this work includes exploring all parts of ourselves (the past, present, and future) and tying them together with compassion, understanding, and respect. Awareness of our unique patterns and ourselves is the first step to creating a meaningful life. Counselling provides a safe environment in which we can explore and work towards a healthier version of ourselves.

Humor, genuine compassion and empathy are necessary for healing - especially the humor part! Which is why they are benchmarks of my clinical practice. Combined together, the healing force created is a 'game changer' in people's lives. My approach to psychotherapy is person centered (congrats, you are unique! Your therapy should be too), grounded in attachment theory (relationships are our friend! Don't argue...everyone needs a friend) and developmental psychology (we all go through life changes, change suucks, but it's unavoidable). All this guides our path to wellness. Heads up - standard credential speech ahead...

Therapy for those that are finally ready for a change! You’re exhausted all the time, but struggle to sleep. You try to relax but it never works and you end up snapping at family/friends. “What’s wrong with me?” you might ask yourself. "I don’t even feel like myself anymore". Dreading to go to work or see people, you isolate yourself. Everything just seems so draining! You feel inadequate, defeated, not good enough, like you can’t do anything right. Feeling lost and stuck because nothing you have tried seems to be working. There is so much at stake! You realize it is time to try something different. You've come to the right place.

A parent or an adult child fighting to be understood? I've helped thousands like you as a Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor for the past 20 years, and as a first-gen immigrant parent that understands intergenerational and systemic challenges. Navigating life’s problems is like crossing a jungle. Unsure how to proceed, we venture in, stumble, and eventually make a way through. With enough time our uncertain trail becomes so well worn that walking it is second nature. Sadly, some worn paths don’t lead to the life we wanted. We feel disconnected from our lives, often irritable, in conflict with loved ones, and slipping into self-destructive habits. Making new paths can be daunting, yet doing so fosters feeling in control of yourself and your life, experiencing more connection in your relationships, and finding enduring answers to seemingly unsolvable problems.

Finding the right psychologist, someone you can create a meaningful working relationship with, is essential to therapy. I hope to make you feel welcome and supported while exploring challenging areas in your life to find real solutions. Everyone has the potential to live a happy, healthy life. Support from a psychologist can be the missing step toward improving mental health and meeting personal goals. I approach therapy with optimism, understanding that while difficulties and setbacks are inevitable, with the right support, everyone can develop the skills needed to navigate challenges and achieve a more fulfilling life.

Accepting new clients for individual adult counselling. I have a significant history of working with trauma and substance use, and I am trained in EMDR Therapy. I take a person-centered and wholistic approach, meeting you where you are at and collaborating with you on your healing goals. I’m experienced in both abstinence based and harm reduction approaches, viewing addiction as the symptom of underlying hurt/pain that often stems from trauma. My role is to ask questions, share information, support, and provide feedback while creating a safe, non-judgmental, and empowering space for healing. www.ckps.ca

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
