By blending Motivational Interviewing (MI), Family Systems Therapy (FST), and Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), I create a comprehensive, holistic approach to helping families and individuals dealing with substance use disorders (SUDs) and/or mental health challenges. This integrative model combines the strengths of each modality to support both the individual struggling with addiction and their family members, with a focus on improving communication, enhancing motivation, and fostering positive change.

I aim to support individuals & families to improve lives that have been negatively impacted by drugs, alcohol, gambling and process addictions. With 20 years of experience, we are well equipped with the knowledge and expertise to provide care and support for a full range of addiction concerns. I aim to help intercept and turn life back to the preferred direction of each individual and their families. I aim to help in the manner the impacted family members wish with a client centered approach. We are not able to force someone into change; however, our care and compassion allows individuals to explore change.

I am seeking clients that are doing their utmost to do the next right thing. People may stumble, that does not mean that they are down for the count. If you are a person that is wanting to learn resilience, perseverance, and strength in themselves you are for me. I see value in what many would not, I come at every battle with the expectation that my clients will win the fight they are in, whatever that is for you. Whether it be a chronic illness, grieving any loss in your life. The secret to a fulfilling life is that we are only as sick as our secrets. If you're a person in need of an ear to assist in growth, I am here for you.

Accepting New Patients - Navigating life's unexpected challenges and stress can lead to feelings of overwhelm, being lost, and feeling alone. Often when people experience this discomfort they use coping strategies that can lead to negative outcomes, such as low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and using substances. If you are needing help to get back to yourself and learn new healthy coping strategies, wanting to explore addictions treatment or have untreated trauma, we will work together to develop a treatment plan that suits your needs and helps to achieve your goals.

Understanding the basis for a behaviour is important in identifying why that behaviour persists. Basically, looking at concerning behaviours through the lens of "Is this behaviour currently solving another problem? Or what problem has is solved before?" Then, using a blend of CBT techniques integrated in the solution focused lens to we adjust the behaviour.

I work with anxiety, addiction (substance use), and chronic pain. Sometimes the little things feel overwhelming—you might find yourself overreacting, overthinking, or unable to let go of stress. Maybe you’re tired of numbing pain or avoiding problems because it’s just not helping anymore. You might want to break unhealthy patterns and learn to manage emotions so they don’t control you. If you’re ready to address the roots of addiction and the stress and anxiety often tied to chronic pain, and work toward lasting change, we could be a good fit.

“We’re all too vulnerable to face the hugeness of life alone. It doesn’t make sense to do that… we need each other” (Sue Johnson). I believe meaningful connection - with ourselves and others - is the foundation of wellbeing. Yet, painful experiences and unhelpful patterns often stand in the way. Relationship struggles can erode self-worth and leave us feeling anxious, stuck, or alone. They also ripple through other areas of life - our health, work, and family. You’re here because you’re seeking change. I’m here to offer a safe, supportive space for your journey.

I believe the quality of the therapeutic relationship is crucial to the effectiveness of psychotherapy. My goal as therapist is to establish a relationship with my client that will allow me to effectively understand them in a nonjudgmental way and challenge them to grow and gain new perspective. I seek to be emotionally present, authentic, respectful, open, honest, and deeply empathic. In building on my client's existing inner strengths, they are empowered to seek and make the changes needed to live full and satisfying lives.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
