When I meet with a client, whether a child, teenager, or adult, my intention is to be present with them where they are, first as a human being; then to help them feel safe and comfortable with me and to bring my years of experience and training, along with their knowledge of themselves and their desire to change, to resolve what brought them to therapy.

Feeling distant from your spouse? Fighting with your teen? Struggling with anger, anxiety, depression, or addiction? Experienced trauma? I work with a variety of clients, but particularly enjoy problems in which clients that have felt misunderstood or mistreated. This includes working with adolescents, parent- teen conflict, relationship difficulties in both individuals and couples, addictions, anger or anxiety management, trauma, and Borderline Personality Disorder. In many of the clients I see, fear and confusion are often barriers to a satisfying life. Healing often comes through gaining confidence in areas one can control.

Whether you're an adult or adolescent, I look forward to working together to achieve your goals.
The counselling process can take on many forms, whether it's about self-exploration and understanding, emotional processing, problem solving, healing, venting or feeling better about yourself and your relationships in general. It can be about drastic shifts or about minor adjustments. There is no 'one size fits all' in therapy! What clients have in common is that they are brave, willing to be vulnerable at times and have a desire to make a change in their lives, whether functional or emotional in nature.

If you have found your way to my site it is highly likely that you have been coping for some time with a teen exhibiting addictions, oppositional behaviour, and emotional dysregulation.
My ideal family is one that is tired of hurting each other. My ideal family has at least one family member, usually a teenager, impacted by drugs, alcohol, and process addictions like video games. The healthy part of the family is motivated by fear to use control to stop their teenager from their addictive behaviour. If control is ineffective then power struggles can develop which tear at the family power structures. My ideal family has at least one family member who learns addictions are rooted in multigerational issues, trauma, and mental illness. Families want healthy loving interconnections and not power struggles.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
