I rely on an integrative approach to therapy that combines elements of CBT,
ACT
, DBT, EFT and EMDR.
I am a Registered Provisional psychologist with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta. My approach to therapy emphasizes the importance of confronting our painful emotions and experiences from a place of safety, curiosity, and honesty. I work with individuals and couples as well as teens and youth. I also have a special interest in working with men. I believe that men are often under resourced when it comes to accessing, expressing, and understanding their emotions, often leading to painful, yet avoidable, experiences.

I’ve obtained training in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT),
ACT
, SFT, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Thera-play (Level One Foundational), Trauma-Focused Expressive Arts Therapy, and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
My approach is founded on two basic beliefs: 1) people want to be their best selves; they may just need some help finding what their best self looks like, 2) humans are social animals; our brains are built for connection - we need safe relationships to feel like we can heal, deal, grow and change. Most importantly, I believe that people are resilient. I operate from a trauma-informed and person-centered approach. I aim to listen non-judgmentally and with care. Within sessions, I intentionally strive to provide a warm presence – which is determined by how I am, not what I do.

My hope is that I can be a support person to all my clients, create a space of safety, calm, and
acceptance
, with the goal of helping individuals feel whole.
In my role, I enjoy working with children, youth, teens, and adults. Depending on the presenting concern, we would work out a plan on how to tackle the issues impacting the client. Some of the areas I work with are: anxiety, depression, school-related concerns, changes in life, separation/divorce, parenting, negative thought patterns, gender identity, body image, self-concept, and other areas that are related to achieving a better sense of self. I believe in working as an alliance and I am check-in periodically to see if therapy is meeting the goals of each individual client.

Acceptance
Commitment Theory.
Many people who struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress, feel embarrassed or stigmatized. Others who struggle with domestic violence, relationship issues, faith based struggles, addiction issues, suicidal ideations, and anger management issues feel alone and unsure of who they can speak to. The foundation of my counselling practice is being compassionate and non-judgmental. I provide a person-centred practice which is about the client defining their own goals. I assure my clients they are in a safe place, confidentiality upheld, validated, and their life story and experiences honoured.

Trauma can have such a complex impact on our wellbeing, and sometimes the healing process can feel really challenging. Trauma can affect how we think, feel, and
act
in the world and have us doubting ourselves. It’s okay to ask for help. Therapy can look like lots of things including exploring what happened to you, learning to be more connected in the present, and preparing for the future. Therapy can be about processing painful experiences, and it can be about reconnecting with joy and pleasure. Whatever your path, I will work with you to create a space for change.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
