I am motivated by the belief that change is possible for all. We can have difficulty believing in ourselves. Sometimes life can derail our chosen path. When barriers to the journey of freedom are challenging for you, I can be the supportive and collaborative presence you may need to achieve your desired outcomes. I do this by utilizing a holistic approach incorporating Transtheoretical Model of Behavioural Change, coupled with Motivational Interviewing. In our time together, you can expect a safe, non-judgmental process, to establish a relationship of trust that supports the process of recovery, based on your desired outcomes.

As a cisgender gay man myself, I have personal experience with this self-acceptance journey and I use that knowledge to help clients reframe thoughts, enact self-compassion and remember that thoughts are just thoughts, not facts.
I work with all sorts of people, but 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the challenges of being queer in a majority heterosexual world are often the centre of conversation. I focus on helping people to understand and express their identity in the context of the intersection between 2SLGBTQ+ issues and the mental health struggles that accompany this journey, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people in and out of the 2SLGBTQ+ community are struggling with anxious or intrusive thoughts, dealing with family rejection or loss, and experiencing depression. It's time to take control of our identities.

My ideal client is someone who has experienced the depth of life's challenges, perhaps grappling with Trauma, PTSD, Grief, or Relationship Issues. They could be facing anxieties, behavioral concerns, or family conflicts stemming from diverse issues. These challenges have shaped them, but they haven’t defined them. Their goal? To find clarity, healing, and empowerment. They seek a therapeutic space that is both culturally sensitive and technically adept. They want to be seen, heard, and understood. They yearn for resilience, growth, and a renewed sense of purpose.

I am passionate about engaging with clients in a non-judgmental manner, fostering an environment where we can explore the individual's challenges, strengths, and aspirations.
Many individuals find themselves in stagnation in life, often stemming from trauma, burnout, or grief. Through my therapy services, I aim to assist individuals in overcoming these challenges in a holistic manner. I address the interconnected aspects of mind, body, and spirit, while leveraging their inherent strengths.

In our post-COVID world, addictions and traumas have become increasingly prevalent. During COVID, traumas and past fears seem to have been activated and often the result is an addiction–sometimes to a substance like alcohol or drugs, or sometimes to a behaviour like gambling or working too hard. It seems like life has become more difficult, however by changing some habits, life can improve.

I take a holistic approach to practice, considering how our mind, emotions, body and spirit come together to frame our relationship to the world. I believe mental health to be not only the removal of challenges, but the creation of an active sense of well-being. So, in sessions together, I seek to focus not only on difficulties, but to consider what could be done to increase your resilience and sense of well-being. How we define health can vary widely, and some paths I tend to take focus on gratitude, mindfulness, self-compassion and vulnerability.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
