Hi, I’m Alyssa (she/her), and I’m so glad you’re here. Before pursuing my Master of Counselling, I spent five years as a teacher, where I discovered my passion for supporting mental health and helping students through social and emotional challenges. As someone who was diagnosed later in life with autism and ADHD, my own mental health journey further inspired me to help neurodivergent individuals lead more authentic lives. I believe education is powerful, and most of us were never taught about our mental health. However, learning to understand our mind can give us the tools to live life more vulnerably, honestly, and authentically.

Dr. McGrath believes we all have the ability to solve our problems. We may feel ‘stuck’ from past traumas or stresses or overwhelmed by present events. When we experience stress or trauma, it can be difficult to access these solutions because we are weighed down by our emotions. At Healing Change Centre, Dr. McGrath’s role is to facilitate finding solutions during a crisis so that people know ‘they can get through tomorrow’. He also aids his clients in becoming more aware of their emotions and expressing them in a different way, so they have the ability to stay connected.

Life comes with its challenges. The pain of past regrets, future anxieties, and an overwhelming present can often overshadow opportunities for engagement, connection, and meaningful experiences in the here and now. This is not how you imagined your maternity leave. Instead of feeling happy like you’re supposed to, you are anxious and always on the verge of tears. There’s a constant nagging feeling like you’re not good enough for your baby. And let’s not talk about the exhaustion. It scares you to hold your baby, but at the same time you can’t let go. So, you end up holding her during nap times…and never find the time to attend to our own needs. When you look in the mirror, it’s like you are looking at a stranger. It is no longer a matter of doing your best, it’s about surviving this season of life. Or is this how it will be forever?

I am passionate about helping people whose emotions have been in the driver's seat for too long, whether that be anxiety, shame, stress, or one of countless others. I work with individuals who identify as highly sensitive, those who struggle with anxiety and depression, and those who have been impacted by traumatic events in their lives. I emphasize learning and integrating skills to forge a healthy relationship with our emotions, something we have not all had the opportunity to develop. I love talking to people, hearing their story, and working together to balance acceptance of who we are with change that is meaningful and lasting.

You’re drained—constantly navigating worries, expectations, and emotions that feel overwhelming. Sometimes even simple tasks feel impossible, unsure if you will ever regain the motivation you once had. You may be entering into a new phase of life and are feeling unsettled by the uncertainty of the unknown, or fear that you’ve strayed off the path you envisioned for yourself. Maybe your relationships feel unfulfilling, or conflict leaves you feeling unheard. You push through these concerns, but deep down, you wonder if relief or living the life you want is even possible, questioning how to even begin working toward your desired path.

It can be difficult to go to counselling, particularly for the first time. Finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with is an important, and at times challenging, process. You likely want someone that can give you direction or tools, but also you connect with and feel supported by. I too feel this is important and strive to provide you with an experience that is both warm / caring AND competent/ knowledgeable. For many years I have worked with individual's and couple's concerns in this manner. I specialize in helping individuals or couples move forward, heal their pain, feel happier and find more peace.

I believe that therapy works best when it feels safe, respectful, and collaborative. My style is warm and down-to-earth, with a focus on understanding the full person and building a trusting relationship. As a member of the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent communities, I know what it’s like to feel out of place. My own journey has shown me the importance of self-acceptance and finding connection. I care deeply about supporting others as they discover their own agency and wisdom, especially those who feel “outside the box.” Growth happens through relationship, and I’m here to walk alongside.
