Life can be confusing and lonely at times. Are you currently struggling with your self-identify, self-worth or self-value? Are you in a toxic romantic relationship that is making you feel less worthy on a daily basis? Are you struggling with establishing healthy boundaries with your family, colleagues or loved ones? Well, you have found the right therapist. Therapy, is a process of self discovery and self realization. Are there patterns in your behaviour or thought processes making feel disconnected with those around you? Is your past trauma, or childhood getting into the way of your happiness?

McGrath has received additional training in the integration of somatic therapy with EMDR through natural processing
Dr. McGrath believes we all have the ability to solve our problems. We may feel ‘stuck’ from past traumas or stresses or overwhelmed by present events. When we experience stress or trauma, it can be difficult to access these solutions because we are weighed down by our emotions. At Healing Change Centre, Dr. McGrath’s role is to facilitate finding solutions during a crisis so that people know ‘they can get through tomorrow’. He also aids his clients in becoming more aware of their emotions and expressing them in a different way, so they have the ability to stay connected.

I use somatic and polyvagal-informed approaches, Narrative Therapy, and ACT to help clients feel safe, connected, and attuned.
I believe that therapy works best when it feels safe, respectful, and collaborative. My style is warm and down-to-earth, with a focus on understanding the full person and building a trusting relationship. As a member of the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent communities, I know what it’s like to feel out of place. My own journey has shown me the importance of self-acceptance and finding connection. I care deeply about supporting others as they discover their own agency and wisdom, especially those who feel “outside the box.” Growth happens through relationship, and I’m here to walk alongside.

I have an interest in Somatic interventions and consider the mind/body connection integral to healing.
I aim to be an unusual therapist. I harness imagination, energy, enthusiasm, poetry & humour in my effort to understand your story and elevate your voice. Whether you are considering the past, the present, or the future, I believe that therapeutic conversations can expand the insight, understanding, & responses we have available to heal ourselves heart, mind, and spirit. It is a privilege to come alongside you and join you in this journey. I practice the art of paying attention, which means what you say to me and who you are is extremely important. I will work hard during our time together to listen, to understand, and to help.

I work from trauma-informed somatic-mindfulness based perspectives, with a compassionate and gentle approach to trauma, addiction, grief, and relationships.
We all carry multiple stories about our selves, our lives, and our experiences. There are parts in our stories that are sometimes hidden from our awareness. It is in the calm noticing, re-discovery, and re-telling of our stories that we can find and connect with parts of ourselves that may need healing, and also parts of ourselves that are insightful, strong, and brilliant even in the midst of hardship and darkness. Through facilitating, witnessing, and holding space together, we can engage in our personal work of healing. I look forward to connecting with you.

SMART is the multivitamin of somatic sensory therapies.
In SMART therapy clients are directed to REGULATE through MOVEMENT and as a result START TALKING so problem solving and healing can happen. Therapy is provided in a specially designed room with specialized equipment, such as arial swings, spinning, weighted blankets, balance beams, fitness balls, person sized pea-pod, body socks, dolphin pillows, and safe cubby holes, and tents. Movement, rest and safety is used to support natural ways of regulating bodies and emotions, facilitate parent-child attachment-building and allow for embodied processing of hurtful and traumatic experiences. It is not at all like traditional play therapy.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
