Most of us experience times of struggle and uncertainty in life and we do our best to navigate these difficult and complex situations. Often we are successful in overcoming these obstacles, but sometimes they leave us with feelings of unease and discomfort as we try to maintain a sense of stability. Feeling alone while we suffer through these stages of life can be overwhelming.

Disappointments are unavoidable. A world built to connect us might feel engineered to separate, distract, and alienate us from ourselves, our relationships, passions, and humanity. Reconnecting with our authentic selves is the antidote to disappointment and the path to health, and happiness. When we reconnect with the world within ourselves, we also reconnect with the world around us. On this journey, everyone deserves an ally: I help disappointed people eliminate silent frustrations, find purpose and inspiration to live meaningful lives.

You deserve a space where you can be fully seen, heard, and understood. I work with people navigating anxiety, stress, self-doubt, and the pressure to appear “put together” while feeling anything but. Many are ready to break old patterns, heal from past relational or emotional wounds, and build more authentic, fulfilling connections. I work with those who often carry the weight of feeling “different,” relying on coping strategies like overachieving, people-pleasing, or staying hyper-independent. Others are facing challenges in intimacy, connection, and shifting identity that can feel confusing or overwhelming.

My name is Jack Lilja. I enjoy working with people who are motivated to change. Making the decision to connect with a therapist is the most important first step in creating change. Working together, my goal is to help individuals of all ages to overcome the obstacles that often block our ability to utilize the strengths that we all possess. You bring the expert knowledge of your own life into the therapeutic relationship and together we will use that knowledge to create your desired lived experience.

My passion lies in creating a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore, grow, and navigate life’s challenges. I embrace a relational-integrated approach to therapy, understanding that each person is a unique individual who has their own needs, while also understanding that every person can be seen as a system of the relationships they live within. Most of the clients I work with are neurodivergent or queer, and I absolutely love working with both of these populations. If you are the parent of a queer youth and uncertain how to best support them, please feel free to reach out to me!

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
