Welcome! It takes courage to begin the journey towards wellness and wholeness. Whether you’re feeling exhausted, confused, sad, numb, anxious, stuck, or just ready to take the next big step, I’d be honoured to walk beside you as you heal and grow. Traumatic or painful life events like violence, abuse, losses, or accidents may have suddenly or drastically thrown you off of your life trajectory. Or, maybe they happened a long time ago yet resurface, affecting habits, decisions, and relationships today. Therapy can help you to feel empowered and in control of your life by restoring stability, safety, and trust.

I believe that the best decisions are made by you and that it's my job as a therapist to clarify, prepare and support you as you explore what you need. I work from a client centered approach, offering a cultural understanding. I am committed to accompanying you, hearing you and helping you flourish into your best and happiest self. Life is not linear and will throw you curve balls; you may have times when you feel weak or angry; and you won't feel at your best. The next day may feel daunting and exhausting and you feel overwhelmed. You may feel that you're disappointing yourself and others.

I work mostly with adults, couples and families, as well as with other therapists (who need a safe space to talk too!) I aim to approach conversations through a non-pathologizing, respectful lens and to honour people's lived experience. Those who consult me come in to discuss a broad spectrum of issues, such as: depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, grief/loss, relationship difficulties, self-doubt, crises of identity, body image struggles, and experiences of injustice based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation/identity, etc.

Motherhood can be both exhausting & magical. Sometimes it is portrayed in a way on social media that looks vastly different from your reality. Are you feeling overwhelmed with worry & "what-if" questions in pregnancy? Do you need to process your birth experience? Are you struggling to feel like yourself in postpartum? Do you feel like your relationship has changed since becoming a parent? Are you burnout from the many demands of motherhood? I support women in every stage of parenthood from fertility, loss, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting. You are not alone in these struggles & you don't have to face them alone either.

I have no doubt that you've done your best to figure out your problems in your own head. And as far as you've been able to get with that, maybe you’re still surprised at how automatically you react to certain situations in your life - like at work, or with a partner. You go a bit numb and don’t know what to say or do, or you react more strongly than you’d like and regret it later. Or maybe you often seem to take things harder than others, and have been called "too sensitive". You often feel misunderstood and struggle to understand yourself sometimes.

I am an experienced counselling therapist and sexual health educator who is passionate about helping people understand, accept, and enjoy their sexuality. I believe that sexuality is a core aspect of our humanity and is therefore just as important to take care of and heal as any other aspect of our being. My expertise is in helping people of all gender and sexual identities experience pleasurable and healthy sexual and romantic relationships. I also offer all-options pregnancy counselling, including pre- and post- abortion support. I am currently offering sessions on Tuesdays between 1:00pm and 8:00pm.

It is important as women and mothers we take the steps to care for ourselves, as we are being pulled in many directions throughout the day. As a parent, I was young, unprepared, and unsupported in challenges that I faced. This has led to my interest in supporting women and parents in their journey. I strive to empower all women to recognize the expectations that society places are not all attainable. You cannot be all of the things, all of the time, and it is okay to slow down and take care of you. I also specialize in working with teens and young adults who are struggling with pieces in life and transitioning to adulthood.

Hello! My name is Cara Chalmers and I am a born and raised Calgarian. I began working as a Registered Social Worker in Alberta in 2006 with my undergraduate degree in Social Work from the University of Calgary. In 2010 I returned to the University of Calgary and completed my Master of Social Work with a Clinical Specialization in 2012. My training and education during these early years of my career focused on working with adolescents, families and young infants. These experiences formed the foundations of my current practice as a clinician who approaches individuals and families from a developmental and systemic framework.

I am a Registered Psychologist and love to work with people to clear away distress. We are always learning how to protect ourselves while making connections with others. Sometimes, what worked for us in the past is no longer helpful and we need to adjust. Our mind, heart, and body work together to try to bring healing and balance but it is easy to get stuck. The psychological sciences have made incredible strides into understanding how and why we achieve psychological health and wellness; I synthesize that information to bring practical therapeutic techniques to become healthy and happy again. I am a PaRx Prescriber.

I believe there is an innate strength in all of us; I also know that living a fulfilling and meaningful life can be a profoundly challenging task. If you are struggling with a life transition, depression, anxiety, or behaviors and emotions that aren't comfortable for you, counselling may be able to help you shift things. A therapist with compassion, empathy, and a base of knowledge about human behavior and psychology can be an extremely powerful agent in achieving change.

You can't remember the last time you were able to relax. Your mind is constantly racing with judgmental and negative thoughts about yourself and your life. All you want is to feel happy, but you don't feel good enough. People who should have been safe have hurt you and let you down, leaving you scared to open up and trust. You find yourself crying at the drop of a hat for no explainable reason, which leads you to feel more isolated and alone - disconnected from everyone. You're unsure if therapy can help, but are willing to try.

But you don't seem to be getting the results you're looking for. I am here to help you let go of the nagging expectations and worry, so you can find more joy. Over 30 years, I have the privilege of talking to, listening to, walking with and praying for women & couples who struggle with their family, marital, and interpersonal relationships. In 2002, I graduated with a MA in counselling. Since then I have been counselling formally in the Calgary area. I love to help women to reconnect with God in their spiritual struggles and work on their relationships with others. I have journeyed with many women who experience domestic abuse. The vicious cycle has kept many in terrifying living situations. I also enjoy working with couples who love each other but have a hard time getting along.

I believe therapy is built on trust, safety, and mutual respect, and so I bring my real self to the therapeutic relationship in order to meet and discover the ‘self’ you want to become. Together we will explore the physical, emotional, and environmental factors creating friction in your life, and work towards sustainable and meaningful change. This may include learning new skills, processing emotions, and finding meaning in your past and present experiences. Life is full of challenges, and I will accompany you in learning to build resilience in the face of those challenges, without becoming overwhelmed

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
