Hi! My name is Joshua Adams and I'm passionate about helping people find their authentic selves and live out their self-chosen purpose. I am calm, empathetic, sincere, open-minded, and a good listener. I love getting to know people and finding their strengths, passions, dreams, and genuine values, helping them overcome any barriers to becoming their authentic selves such as addictions, relationship issues, depression or anxiety. I have noticed that in today's society people are struggling more and more with
spirituality
, their world view and even spiritual abuse.
Everyone struggles with concerns in their life. It may be spiritual fear and concerns, depression, anxiety, family breakdowns or struggling to figure out day to day life. These people want to live whole and happy lives. Their goals are to find tools which will help them to cope and internal strength to face their past and future.

Have you noticed patterns in your life and relating that seem to shut things down? Are you in a relationship you keep hoping will get better, but time doesn't seem to be working in your favour? Are you getting married and determined this will be a "for ever marriage" not just a "wedding day"? I work with individuals and couples to improve their relationships with themselves and others.

Are you ready to begin transforming the beliefs, emotions, and patterns you hold inside of yourself that keep you from fully living the life that you want? Together we can explore the roots of whatever you are currently wanting help with - be it emotional regulation, self-compassion, relationships, depression, anxiety, addictions, life transitions, sexuality,
spirituality
, and racial identity. These roots can span across multiple generations, often inviting us to tune in to our ancestral history.

Contextual forces of family, community, historical events, and trauma shape the brain from conception through the lifespan. Less than optimal circumstances can lead to a compromised nervous system and the formation of maladaptive patterns in the brain and body. As a result, you may suffer from symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, poor emotional regulation, difficulty in relationships, addictions, dissociation; and even autoimmune disorders or physical symptoms that cannot be explained medically. If you want to heal stuck patterns, live authentically with more joy and less fear, and have better relationships, I can help!

While it may take courage to reach out for a first therapy session, nobody is meant to face life's difficulties alone. In my practice, I primarily support those struggling with grief and loss, anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, emotional regulation, difficult or unexpected life-transitions, communication, and finding a healthy balance in one’s life. In my Counselling and
Spirituality
Master’s Program, I was taught to consider the whole person in treatment. In this way, if a client wishes to incorporate their values and
spirituality
in therapy, I am happy to do so in a way that honours their own cultural or faith background.

NEW. CLIENTS. WELCOME. A rough childhood, a bad relationship, or a soul sucking job taught you to get your feelings of worth from people pleasing. But it didn't work. You've spent your life giving to your spouse, children, parents or job. You thought this would make you happy, but now you may feel weighed down, resentful, overwhelmed, or always on the verge of tears. Maybe you feel depressed, unworthy, or like you're drowning. You've taken care of everyone except yourself. Feelings of unworthiness or fear of being selfish may be stopping you from giving yourself the care you’ve given to everyone else. But there is hope.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
