Hello and welcome to Sunburst Counselling & Consulting. What is trauma? Trauma is linked to a memory of an event that sticks within your mind and body. It can result from falling off of a bike, bullying, a car accident, a sexual
assault
or anything at all that happens to you that was out of your control. Unresolved trauma can result in anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD and dissociation, all of which can greatly impact your ability to function. When you lose your ability to function, you may experience a decrease in self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence all of which will impact your core sense of self.

I know that clients are the experts about themselves. I understand that concerns are multi-faceted and can often be complex...being human can be complex so the challenges that are experienced by people often take some exploration. Those who will work well with my approaches will not be looking for diagnoses or quick answers but will be looking to gain new perspectives in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

My gentle nature and in depth, comprehensive training enables me to work with those whom have experienced traumatic events - including onetime happenings or experiences that have happened over a long time. I am able to connect to many different types of people; those who are eager about counselling and those who hold fear about it. My skills and approaches work best with clients who are ready to engage in deep healing; who are ready to create transformation in their lives by truly integrating their pain into their life history not, have it linger in their present.

Has something happened to you and now you feel triggered? What if you no longer felt this way? I help people heal from traumatic experiences and the effects that these painful events have - anxiety, depression, nightmares, stress, emotional exhaustion, being stuck. The therapy I use to help people heal is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. Many people get relief from this therapy that they can't get from talk therapies.

Thanks for taking the time to view my profile. Therapy is a collaborative process that uses curiosity, courage and compassion to start exploring and unpacking all of the parts of ourselves and our experiences so that we can become connected to our wholeness once again. There are times when we may feel haunted by our past experiences, are having difficulties coping with life transitions or stressors, or are feeling stuck. It is my belief that through gentle exploration we can start to find the inner resources needed to move through and grow from these difficult experiences.

Hi there! My name is Rebecca and I'm a counsellor who works with adults in varying populations in their journey through self-evolution and empowerment. I'm especially passionate about working with first responders and the LGBTQ+ community. Being someone who identifies as queer as well as the offspring of a long line of first responders, I'm aware of the many hardships and barriers that exist on a daily basis for those belonging to these communities.

I am a Registered Psychologist and love to work with people to clear away distress. We are always learning how to protect ourselves while making connections with others. Sometimes, what worked for us in the past is no longer helpful and we need to adjust. Our mind, heart, and body work together to try to bring healing and balance but it is easy to get stuck. The psychological sciences have made incredible strides into understanding how and why we achieve psychological health and wellness; I synthesize that information to bring practical therapeutic techniques to become healthy and happy again. I am a PaRx Prescriber.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
