Hello! I’m Mike, and I provide therapy for teenagers, adults, and families. I also provide psychoeducational assessments. Whether we’re teens or adults, we’re constantly working out who we are, what we want, and how to manage the challenges life throws at us. Sometimes that can be difficult, and we can feel overwhelmed with sadness, stress, anxiety, or other concerns. Sometimes we cope with these things in unhealthy ways that hurt ourselves or the people we care about. Confronting those feelings and habits can be incredibly powerful, and can help us grow into the people we want to become.

I have over 20 years experience helping people accomplish their goals in regards to mental wellness. I help individuals, couples and families using research based methods and can incorporate faith/spirituality into treatment if requested. I find treatment plans and interventions are best when they are tailored to match client’s individual needs. Since a strong therapeutic relationship is key, I help clients explore strengths while empowering them to work towards growth and outcomes. Although our past can influence our present, it does not dictate the future.

We all experience different problems from time to time because, well, we are human! Life can seem unfair and there are moments when we might feel hopeless and defeated. Some problems might appear larger than they really are and something that seems like a small problem might affect you greatly. Regardless of what type of problem you have, we can all use help at different times in our lives. The best thing one can do is talk about it. It might take one conversation or several, but it could be the best decision you will ever make. I look forward to speaking with you!

Everybody needs help sometimes… and that’s okay! Sometimes we need somewhere to feel heard or to feel safe enough to let our guard down. Sometimes we lose sight of our inherent worth and value as a human being. And sometimes we need an avenue to help us better understand ourselves and the world around us. As we develop our therapeutic relationship, I will walk beside you as you take steps toward the life you want to live. Whether you’re struggling with day-to-day stressors, a significant life event, or symptoms of a mental health diagnosis (just to name a few), I am here for you.

In times of life challenges, we suffer not only as individuals but also in our relationships. Since 2008, it has been my passion to support individuals and couples in their quest to turn personal and relationship challenges into opportunities for personal growth and greater connection. I help my clients to overcome their personal barriers, often resulting from past pain, unmet emotional needs, and low self-esteem. Validating and working through wounds from childhood and past relationship trauma promotes the personal healing that lets us connect with others authentically and empowers us to create nurturing and loving relationships.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
